Psalm 51

Psalm 51[a]

For the music director, a psalm of David, written when Nathan the prophet confronted him after David’s affair with Bathsheba.[b]

51 Have mercy on me, O God, because of[c] your loyal love.
Because of[d] your great compassion, wipe away my rebellious acts.[e]
Wash away my wrongdoing.[f]
Cleanse me of my sin.[g]
For I am aware of[h] my rebellious acts;
I am forever conscious of my sin.[i]
Against you—you above all[j]—I have sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
So[k] you are just when you confront me;[l]
you are right when you condemn me.[m]
Look, I was guilty of sin from birth,
a sinner the moment my mother conceived me.[n]
Look,[o] you desire[p] integrity in the inner man;[q]
you want me to possess wisdom.[r]
Cleanse me[s] with hyssop[t] and I will be pure;[u]
wash me[v] and I will be whiter than snow.[w]
Grant me the ultimate joy of being forgiven.[x]
May the bones[y] you crushed rejoice.[z]
Hide your face[aa] from my sins.
Wipe away[ab] all my guilt.
10 Create for me a pure heart, O God.[ac]
Renew a resolute spirit within me.[ad]
11 Do not reject me.[ae]
Do not take your holy Spirit[af] away from me.[ag]
12 Let me again experience the joy of your deliverance.
Sustain me by giving me the desire to obey.[ah]
13 Then I will teach[ai] rebels your merciful ways,[aj]
and sinners will turn[ak] to you.
14 Rescue me from the guilt of murder,[al] O God, the God who delivers me.
Then my tongue will shout for joy because of your righteousness.[am]
15 O Lord, give me the words.[an]
Then my mouth will praise you.[ao]
16 Certainly[ap] you do not want a sacrifice, or else I would offer it;[aq]
you do not desire a burnt sacrifice.[ar]
17 The sacrifice God desires is a humble spirit[as]
O God, a humble and repentant heart[at] you will not reject.[au]
18 Because you favor Zion, do what is good for her.[av]
Fortify[aw] the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will accept[ax] the proper sacrifices, burnt sacrifices and whole offerings;
then bulls will be sacrificed[ay] on your altar.[az]

Jonah 3

The People of Nineveh Respond to Jonah’s Warning

The Lord’s message came to Jonah a second time, “Go immediately[a] to Nineveh, that large city,[b] and proclaim to[c] it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah went immediately to Nineveh, in keeping with the Lord’s message. Now Nineveh was an enormous city[d]—it required three days to walk through it![e] Jonah began to enter the city by going one day’s walk, announcing, “At the end of forty days,[f] Nineveh will be overthrown!”[g]

The people[h] of Nineveh believed in God,[i] and they declared a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.[j] When the news[k] reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his royal robe, put on sackcloth, and sat on ashes. He issued a proclamation and said,[l] “In Nineveh, by the decree of the king and his nobles: No human or animal, cattle or sheep, is to taste anything; they must not eat and they must not drink water. Every person and animal must put on sackcloth and must cry earnestly[m] to God, and everyone[n] must turn from their[o] evil way of living[p] and from the violence that they do.[q] Who knows?[r] Perhaps God might be willing to change his mind and relent[s] and turn from his fierce anger[t] so that we might not die.”[u] 10 When God saw their actions—that they turned from their evil way of living.[v]—God relented concerning the judgment[w] he had threatened them with[x] and did not destroy them.[y]

Romans 1:1-7

Salutation

From Paul,[a] a slave[b] of Christ Jesus,[c] called to be an apostle,[d] set apart for the gospel of God.[e] This gospel[f] he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, concerning his Son who was a descendant[g] of David with reference to the flesh,[h] who was appointed the Son-of-God-in-power[i] according to the Holy Spirit[j] by the resurrection[k] from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him[l] we have received grace and our apostleship[m] to bring about the obedience[n] of faith[o] among all the Gentiles on behalf of his name. You also are among them,[p] called to belong to Jesus Christ.[q] To all those loved by God in Rome, called to be saints:[r] Grace and peace to you[s] from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
