Psalm 76

This psalm is a song that Asaph wrote for the music leader. Sing it with the music of stringed instruments.

God has great power

76 People in Judah know who God is.
    He is famous in Israel.[a]
His home is in Salem.
    Yes, he lives in Zion.[b]
There he destroyed all the weapons of our enemy,
    their arrows, their shields,
    and their swords.
He destroyed everything that they use to fight wars.
Selah.
God, you are the one who shines with glory!
You are greater than the greatest mountains.
You won against brave soldiers,
so that we robbed them of everything.
Now they are sleeping,
and they will never wake up!
They are completely helpless.
God of Jacob,
when your enemies heard your battle cry,
both the horses and their riders fell down dead.
Yes, everyone is afraid of you, our God!
When you are angry,
    nobody can stand against you.
From heaven you said how you would judge people.
Everybody on earth became afraid.
    They could not say anything!
This happened when you came to punish wicked people.
You came to rescue the weak and poor people in the land.
Selah.
10 Everybody will praise you,
even those who are angry against you.
You will show them how angry you really are.[c]
11 Make promises to the Lord your God,
and do what you have promised.
Everyone who serves God should bring gifts to him.
We must respect him with fear.
12 He makes proud rulers become humble.
All the kings of the world should be afraid of him.

Isaiah 66:1-13

The Lord is a great Judge

66 This is what the Lord says:

‘Heaven is my throne.
The earth is the place where I put my feet.
So you could not build a house for me to live in.
Where would I lie down to rest?
I made all these things with my own hands.
    That is how everything began.’

The Lord says,

‘I am pleased with people who are humble.
Those people are sorry when they do wrong things.
    They respect my teaching.
You may kill a bull as a sacrifice to me,
but you might also kill a man.
You may offer a lamb to me as a sacrifice,
but you might also break a dog's neck to offer to your idols.
You may give me a grain offering,
but you also offer pigs' blood.
You may burn incense to worship me
but you also worship false gods.
Yes, these people have chosen how they want to live.
They love to do these disgusting things.
So I will cause great trouble to come to them.
It will be the trouble that they are so afraid of.
When I called out to them,
    nobody answered me.
When I spoke to them,
    nobody listened.
They did evil things against me.
They chose to do things that I would hate.’

Hear this message from the Lord, you people who respect his teaching. Some of your own people hate you. They throw you out, because you are faithful to me. They laugh at you and they say, ‘Let the Lord show how great he is! We want to see him make you happy!’

But it is those people who will be ashamed.

Listen to the loud noise that is coming from the city! It is a noise that comes from the temple. The Lord is punishing his enemies as they deserve. That is what is making the noise!

What is happening? Zion is giving birth to a son before she has her birth pains! Nobody has ever heard of anything like that. Nobody has ever seen that happen before. Can a country be born in just one day? Can a nation be born in a moment? But as soon as Zion's birth pains begin, she has already given birth to her children!

The Lord your God says, ‘When I bring a baby to the moment of birth, the child is always born. I do not stop its birth.’

10 All you people who love Jerusalem, join together with its people and be happy. You have been sad to see what has happened to the city, but now you should shout with joy! 11 Jerusalem will take care of you like a mother. She will give you all that you need, like a mother that feeds her baby with milk. The great blessing that comes from her full breasts will make you very happy.

12 The Lord says,

‘Look! I will give peace to Jerusalem,
    like a great river.
Riches from other nations will pour into the city,
like a stream that is full of water.
Jerusalem will take care of you like a mother that feeds her baby.
She will carry you in her arms,
and she will hold you on her knees.
13 I will comfort you,
as a mother comforts her child.
As you live in Jerusalem,
    you will be happy again.’

1 Corinthians 10:23-11:1

23 Some of you may say, ‘We are free to do anything that we want to do!’ But not everything is good for you to do. You may say, ‘We are free to do anything!’ But not everything helps you to be strong as a believer. 24 Do not think about the things that will help you. Instead, each of you should think about what will help other people.

25 You can eat any meat that people sell in the market. Do not ask questions about the meat. Do not cause your thoughts to have trouble. 26 The Bible says this: ‘The earth, and everything in it, belongs to the Lord.’[a]

27 People who do not believe in Christ may ask you to eat a meal with them. Agree to go to his home, if you want to. Then you should eat whatever food they give to you. Do not ask questions about the food. Do not cause your thoughts to have trouble. 28 But someone there may say to you, ‘They offered this food to an idol.’ If someone tells you that, do not eat the food. It might cause trouble to the thoughts of the person who told you. 29 It may not cause your own thoughts to have trouble. But the other person may not be sure if it is right to eat that kind of food.

Perhaps you will say, ‘Why should another person's thoughts decide what is right for me? I am free to do what I want. 30 I thank God for my food before I eat it. If I do that, nobody should say that it is wrong for me to eat it.’

31 Whatever you are doing, show that God is great. When you eat anything, or you drink anything, do it all in a way that praises God. 32 Do not cause problems for other people. Whether they are Jews or Gentiles, or people who belong to God's church, live in a way that does not cause problems for them. 33 Copy my example. Whatever I do, I try to make other people happy. I do not try to do what will help me. Instead, I want to help other people. I live in that way so that God will save many people.

11 Copy my example, in the same way that I copy Christ's example.
