Psalm 137

Psalm 137[a]

137 By the rivers of Babylon
we sit down and weep[b]
when we remember Zion.
On the poplars in her midst
we hang our harps,
for there our captors ask us to compose songs;[c]
those who mock us demand that we be happy, saying:[d]
“Sing for us a song about Zion!”[e]
How can we sing a song to the Lord
in a foreign land?
If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
may my right hand be crippled.[f]
May my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth,
if I do not remember you,
and do not give Jerusalem priority
over whatever gives me the most joy.[g]
Remember, O Lord, what the Edomites did
on the day Jerusalem fell.[h]
They said, “Tear it down, tear it down,[i]
right to its very foundation!”
O daughter Babylon, soon to be devastated,[j]
how blessed will be the one who repays you
for what you dished out to us.[k]
How blessed will be the one who grabs your babies
and smashes them on a rock.[l]

Lamentations 2:13-22

מ (Mem)

13 With what can I equate[a] you?
To what can I compare you, O Daughter Jerusalem?
To what can I liken you[b]
so that[c] I might comfort you, O Virgin Daughter Zion?
Your wound is as deep[d] as the sea.[e]
Who can heal you?[f]

נ (Nun)

14 Your prophets saw visions for you
that were worthless whitewash.[g]
They failed to expose your sin
so as to restore your fortunes.[h]
They saw oracles for you
that were worthless[i] lies.

ס (Samek)

15 All who passed by on the road
clapped their hands to mock you.[j]
They sneered and shook their heads
at Daughter Jerusalem.
“Ha! Is this the city they called[k]
‘the perfection of beauty,[l]
the source of joy of the whole earth!’?”[m]

פ (Pe)

16 All your enemies
gloated over you.[n]
They sneered and gnashed their teeth;
they said, “We have destroyed[o] her!
Ha! We have waited a long time for this day.
We have lived to see it!”[p]

ע (Ayin)

17 The Lord has done what he planned;
he has fulfilled[q] his promise[r]
that he threatened[s] long ago:[t]
He has overthrown you without mercy[u]
and has enabled the enemy to gloat over you;
he has exalted your adversaries’ power.[v]

צ (Tsade)

18 Cry out[w] from your heart[x] to the Lord,[y]
O wall of Daughter Zion![z]
Make your tears flow like a river
all day and all night long![aa]
Do not rest;
do not let your tears[ab] stop!

ק (Qof)

19 Get up! Cry out in the night
when the night watches start![ac]
Pour out your heart[ad] like water
before the face of the Lord![ae]
Lift up your hands[af] to him
for your children’s lives;[ag]
they are fainting[ah] from hunger
at every street corner.[ai]

ר (Resh)

Jerusalem Speaks

20 Look, O Lord! Consider![aj]
Whom have you ever afflicted[ak] like this?
Should women eat their offspring,[al]
their healthy infants?[am]
Should priest and prophet
be killed in the Lord’s[an] sanctuary?

ש (Sin/Shin)

21 The young boys and old men
lie dead on the ground in the streets.
My young women[ao] and my young men
have fallen by the sword.
You killed them when you were angry;[ap]
you slaughtered them without mercy.[aq]

ת (Tav)

22 As if it were a feast day, you call[ar]
enemies[as] to terrify me[at] on every side.[au]
On the day of the Lord’s anger
no one escaped or survived.
My enemy has finished off
those healthy infants whom I bore[av] and raised.[aw]

1 John 5:1-5

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ[a] has been fathered[b] by God, and everyone who loves the father[c] loves the child fathered by him.[d] By this[e] we know that we love the children of God: whenever we love God and obey his commandments. For[f] this is the love of God:[g] that we keep his commandments.[h] And his commandments do not weigh us down, because[i] everyone[j] who has been fathered by God[k] conquers[l] the world.[m]

Testimony About the Son

This[n] is the conquering power[o] that has conquered[p] the world: our faith. Now who is the person who has conquered the world except the one who believes that[q] Jesus is the Son of God?

1 John 5:13-21

Assurance of Eternal Life

13 I have written these things[a] to you who believe[b] in the name of the Son of God so that[c] you may know that you have eternal life.

14 And this is the confidence that we have before him: that[d] whenever[e] we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know[f] that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, then we know that we have the requests that we have asked from him. 16 If[g] anyone sees his fellow Christian[h] committing a sin not resulting in death,[i] he should ask, and God[j] will grant[k] life to the person who commits a sin not resulting in death.[l] There is a sin[m] resulting in death.[n] I do not say that he should ask about that. 17 All unrighteousness[o] is sin, but there is sin not resulting in death.[p]

18 We know that everyone fathered[q] by God does not sin, but God[r] protects[s] the one he has fathered, and the evil one cannot touch him. 19 We know that we are from God,[t] and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us insight to know[u] him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This one[v] is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols.[w]
