GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
Version
Psalm 50:1-8

A psalm by Asaph.

50 The Lord, the only true God, has spoken.
He has summoned the earth
from where the sun rises to where it sets.
God shines from Zion,
the perfection of beauty.
Our God will come and will not remain silent.
A devouring fire is in front of him
and a raging storm around him.
He summons heaven and earth to judge his people:
“Gather around me, my godly people
who have made a pledge to me through sacrifices.”

The heavens announce his righteousness
because God is the judge. Selah

“Listen, my people, and I will speak.
Listen, Israel, and I will testify against you:
I am God, your God!
I am not criticizing you for your sacrifices or burnt offerings,
which are always in front of me.

Psalm 50:22-23

22 Consider this, you people who forget God.
Otherwise, I will tear you to pieces,
and there will be no one left to rescue you.
23 Whoever offers thanks as a sacrifice honors me.
I will let everyone who continues in my way
see the salvation that comes from God.”

Isaiah 9:8-17

The Lord’s Message against His People

The Lord sent a message against Jacob.
The message is against Israel.
All the people of Ephraim
and the people who live in Samaria will know it.
With arrogant and conceited hearts they will say,
10 “Bricks have fallen,
but we will rebuild with hand-cut stones.
Fig trees have been cut down,
but we will replace them with cedars.”
11 The Lord will set Rezin’s oppressors against Israel
and will stir up its enemies—
12 the Arameans from the east and the Philistines from the west.
They will devour Israel with open mouths.

Even after all this, his anger will not disappear,
and he is still ready to use his power.

13 But the people have not returned to the one who struck them,
nor have they sought the Lord of Armies.
14 So in one day the Lord will cut off from Israel
both head and tail,
both palm branches and cattails.
15 Respected and honored leaders are the head.
Prophets who teach lies are the tail.
16 Those who guide these people lead them astray.
Those who are guided by them will be destroyed.
17 That is why the Lord isn’t happy with their young men,
nor will he show compassion for their orphans and widows.
Every one of them is a godless evildoer,
and every mouth speaks foolishness.

Even after all this, his anger will not disappear,
and he is still ready to use his power.

Romans 9:1-9

Paul’s Concern for the Jewish People

As a Christian, I’m telling you the truth. I’m not lying. The Holy Spirit, along with my own thoughts, supports me in this. I have deep sorrow and endless heartache. I wish I could be condemned and cut off from Christ for the sake of others who, like me, are Jewish by birth. They are Israelites, God’s adopted children. They have the Lord’s glory, the pledges,[a] Moses’ Teachings, the true worship, and the promises. The Messiah is descended from their ancestors according to his human nature. The Messiah is God over everything, forever blessed. Amen.

Now it is not as though God’s word has failed. Clearly, not everyone descended from Israel is part of Israel or a descendant of Abraham. However, ⌞as Scripture says,⌟ “Through Isaac your descendants will carry on your name.” This means that children born by natural descent ⌞from Abraham⌟ are not necessarily God’s children. Instead, children born by the promise are considered Abraham’s descendants.

For example, this is what the promise said, “I will come back at the right time, and Sarah will have a son.”
