Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Through God We Shall Do Valiantly
For the choir director. According to [a]Shushan Eduth. A [b]Mikhtam of David. For teaching. [c]When he struggled with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and Joab returned, and smote twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.
60 O God, (A)You have rejected us. You have [d](B)broken us;
You have been (C)angry; Oh, (D)restore us.
2 You have made the [e](E)land quake, You have split it open;
(F)Heal its breaches, for it shakes.
3 You have (G)caused Your people to see hardship;
You have given us [f]wine to (H)drink that causes reeling.
4 You have given a (I)banner to those who fear You,
[g]In order to flee to it from the bow. [h]Selah.
5 (J)That Your (K)beloved may be rescued,
(L)Save with Your right hand, and answer [i]us!
6 God has spoken in His [j](M)holiness:
“I will exult, I will portion out (N)Shechem and measure out the valley of (O)Succoth.
7 (P)Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
(Q)Ephraim also is the [k]helmet of My head;
Judah is My [l](R)scepter.
8 (S)Moab is My washbowl;
Over (T)Edom I shall throw My shoe;
Make a loud shout, O (U)Philistia, because of Me!”
9 Who will bring me into the fortified city?
Who [m]will lead me to Edom?
10 Have You Yourself, O God, not (V)rejected us?
And (W)will You, O God, not go forth with our armies?
11 Oh give us help against the adversary,
For (X)salvation [n]by man is worthless.
12 [o]Through God we shall (Y)do valiantly,
And it is He who will (Z)tread down our adversaries.
12 [a]Ephraim surrounds Me with [b](A)lies
And the house of Israel with deceit;
And Judah is also unruly against God,
Even against the Holy One who is faithful.
12 [c]Ephraim feeds on (B)wind
And pursues the (C)east wind continually;
He abounds in falsehood and destruction.
Moreover, [d]he cuts a covenant with Assyria,
And oil is carried to Egypt.
Yahweh’s Contention with Judah
2 And Yahweh has a (D)contention with Judah
And will punish Jacob (E)according to his ways;
He will cause everything to return to him according to his deeds.
3 In the womb he (F)took his brother by the heel,
And in his maturity he [e](G)wrestled with God.
4 Indeed, he [f]wrestled with the angel and prevailed;
He wept and (H)sought His favor.
He found Him at (I)Bethel,
And there He spoke with us,
5 Even Yahweh, the God of hosts,
Yahweh is His [g](J)name of remembrance.
6 Therefore, (K)return to your God,
(L)Keep lovingkindness and justice,
And (M)hope in your God continually.
7 A [h]merchant, in whose hands are deceptive (N)balances,
He loves to oppress.
8 And Ephraim said, “Surely I have become (O)rich;
I have found wealth for myself;
In all my labors they will find in me
(P)No iniquity, which would be sin.”
9 But I have been Yahweh your God since the land of Egypt;
I will make you (Q)settle in tents again,
As in the days of the appointed festival.
10 And I have spoken to the (R)prophets,
And I [i]made visions abound,
And by the hand of the prophets I gave (S)parables.
11 Is there wickedness in Gilead?
Surely they are worthless.
In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;
Yes, (T)their altars are like the stone heaps
Beside the furrows of the field.
12 Now (U)Jacob fled to the field of Aram,
And (V)Israel worked for a wife,
And for a wife he kept sheep.
13 But by a (W)prophet Yahweh brought Israel up from Egypt,
And by a prophet he was kept.
14 (X)Ephraim has provoked to bitter anger;
So his Lord will leave his (Y)bloodguilt on him
And cause his (Z)reproach to return to him.
Family and Work
18 (A)Wives, (B)be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 (C)Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them. 20 (D)Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is pleasing [a]to the Lord. 21 (E)Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart.
22 (F)Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters [b]according to the flesh, (G)not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but with [c]integrity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, do your work [d]heartily, (H)as for the Lord [e]rather than for men, 24 (I)knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward [f]of (J)the inheritance. [g](K)Serve the Lord Christ. 25 For (L)he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and [h](M)that without partiality.
Final Instructions and Greetings
4 Masters, show to your slaves what is right and fair, (N)knowing that you too have a Master in heaven.
