Isaiah 55:1-9

Come to the Lord!

55 ‘Listen! All of you who are thirsty,
come here for water to drink!
You may have no money,
but come here and buy food to eat!
Come and buy wine and milk!
You do not need to pay any money. It is free![a]
Do not spend money on anything that is not real food.
You work hard for your money,
so do not spend it on things which do not help you.
Listen carefully to me.
Eat something that will make you strong!
    Enjoy the best food!
Come to me and listen carefully.
If you accept my teaching,
    you will have real life!
Then I will make a covenant with you,
    to be my people.
My promise will continue for ever,
like the promise that I made to King David.
So look! I chose David
to show my power to other people.
I made him a leader to rule the people of the nations.
Now you will call other nations to come to you.
They will be nations that you did not know before.
Nations that did not know you before
will now run quickly to you.
They will come to you,
because they see that you are great.
The Lord your God, Israel's Holy God,
    will make people honour you.’
Come to serve the Lord now,
while he lets you find him.
Call out to him for help,
    while he is near you.
Wicked people need to change the way that they live.
Evil people must stop thinking their evil thoughts.
They must turn back to the Lord our God,
because he will be kind to them.
Yes, God will completely forgive them,
if they turn back to him.
The Lord says,
‘Remember! My thoughts are not the same as your thoughts.
The way that you do things is not the same as the way that I do things.
The sky is far higher than the earth.
In the same way, I do things in a much better way than you do.
Also, my thoughts are much higher than your thoughts.

Psalm 63:1-8

David wrote this psalm when he was in the Judah wilderness.

A morning song[a]

63 God, you are my God.
I want to be near to you.
I need you to give me life,
like a thirsty person in a dry desert.
As a person needs water to live,
that is how I need you.[b]
When I have gone into your temple,
I have seen what you are like.
I have seen your great power and your glory.
Your faithful love for me is better than life itself.
So I will speak out to praise you.
Yes, I will thank you for as long as I live.
I will lift up my hands and I will pray to you.
You make me very happy,
better than a feast of good food.
I will sing happy songs to praise you.
When I lie on my bed,
I think about you all through the night.
You are the one who keeps me safe,
like a bird protects its babies under its wings.
So I sing happy songs.
I keep very near to you
and your strong right hand keeps me safe.

1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Idols

10 My Christian friends, remember what happened to our Israelite ancestors. Moses led them out of Egypt long ago. While they followed Moses, they all walked under the same cloud. All of them walked across the Red Sea.[a] It is like God baptized all of them in the cloud and in the sea. In that way, they became people who followed Moses. All our ancestors ate the same spiritual food.[b] All of them drank the same spiritual drink. They drank water from the spiritual rock that went with them. Christ was that rock.[c] They all received the same help from God, but most of them did not please God. God caused most of them to die in the wilderness.[d]

We must learn from those things that happened to our ancestors. We must not want to do very bad things, like they did. Do not worship idols, as some of them did. The Bible says: ‘The people sat down to eat and to drink. After that, they got up from their meal and they danced.’[e]

Nor must we ever have sex in wrong ways. Some of our ancestors did that, and 23,000 of them died in one day as a result.[f]

Nor must we do bad things to see whether the Lord will punish us. Some of our ancestors did that, and God sent snakes to destroy them.[g]

10 Do not complain against God. Some of our ancestors spoke like that, and God sent an angel of death to kill them.[h]

11 All these things happened to our ancestors so that we would learn from them. They are written in the Bible to teach us important lessons. We are people who live at a time when all things will become complete.

12 If you think that you are standing strongly, be careful! Do not fall down! 13 You may often want to do wrong things. The things that are difficult for you are difficult for other people too. Remember that God is always there to help you. He will not let any bad thing be too difficult for you. He will help you to stand against it. When you want to do something wrong, God will make you strong in your spirit. He will show you a way out, so that you do not do anything wrong.

Luke 13:1-9

Stop doing wrong things or die

13 At that time, some people were with Jesus. They told him what happened to some people from Galilee. They had been burning animals as a gift for God. Pilate sent some soldiers to kill them.[a]

Jesus replied, ‘Think about those people from Galilee. Perhaps you think that they had done more bad things than other people from Galilee. Do you think that is why they had to die? No! But I tell you this. All of you have done many bad things. So you must change how you live and you must turn to God. If you do not, you will also die as they did.

And you remember what happened to those 18 people in Siloam. A high building fell down and it killed them. Perhaps you think that they had done more bad things than the other people in Jerusalem. But I tell you, no, they had not. All of you have also done many bad things. So you must change how you live and you must turn to God. If you do not, you will also die as they did.’

A story about a fig tree

Then Jesus told this story. ‘A man had a garden where he grew fruit. He had planted a fig tree there. But when he came to look for fruit on it, he could not find any. So he said to his gardener, “Look, for three years, I have come to look for fruit on this tree. But I have never found any. So cut the tree down! I do not think that it should be here. It is wasting the ground.”

“Master,” the gardener replied, “please leave the tree in the ground for one more year. Let me dig round it and let me put some good soil there.[b] If I do that, next year, the fig tree may have some fruit on it. If it does not, I will cut it down for you.” ’[c]
