Chapter 26

Thanksgiving for God’s Gifts. When you have entered the land that the Lord, your God, is giving to you as an inheritance and you have taken possession of it and are dwelling in it, you shall take the firstfruits of the produce of the earth in the land that the Lord, your God, is giving you, and you shall put them in a basket. You shall then bring them to the place that the Lord, your God, has chosen as a dwelling place for his name. Go to the priest then in office and say, “I declare today to the Lord, your God, that I have come into the land that the Lord promised to our fathers to give us.” The priest will then take the basket out of your hand and set it down in front of the altar of the Lord, your God. You shall declare before the Lord, your God, “My father was a wandering Aramean,[a] and he went down into Egypt with a few people and he dwelt there becoming a great nation, powerful and numerous. The Egyptians mistreated us, afflicted us and forced us to do hard labor. We cried out to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and took notice of our affliction, labor, and oppression. The Lord brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with terrifying and awesome signs and wonders. He brought us to this place and gave us a land, this land that is flowing with milk and honey. 10 Now I have brought the firstfruits of the land that you, O Lord, have given me.” Then place it before the Lord, your God, and worship the Lord, your God. 11 You and the Levites and the foreigner who lives with you will rejoice over every good thing that the Lord, your God, has given to you and your household.

Psalm 91:1-2

Psalm 91[a]

Security under God’s Protection

You who abide in the shelter of the Most High,[b]
who rest in the shadow of the Almighty,
say to the Lord, “You are my refuge and my fortress,
my God in whom I place my trust.”

Psalm 91:9-16

You have made the Lord your refuge
and chosen the Most High to be your dwelling.
10 Therefore, no evil will threaten you,
no calamity will come near your dwelling.
11 [a]For he will command his angels[b] about you—
to guard you wherever you go.
12 They will lift you up with their hands,
lest you dash your foot against a stone.[c]
13 You will tread upon the asp and the viper;
you will trample the lion and the dragon.[d]
14 [e]“Because he loves me, I will deliver him,
I will raise high[f] the one who acknowledges my name.
15 When he calls to me, I will answer,
    and I will be with him in time of distress;
I will rescue him and cause him to be honored.[g]
16 I will reward him with a long life
    and show him my salvation.”[h]

Romans 10:8-13

But what does it say?

“The word is near you,
on your lips and in your heart”

(that is, the word of faith that we proclaim).

If you confess with your lips, “Jesus is Lord,”[a] and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes in the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11 As Scripture asserts, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Gentile. The same Lord is Lord of all, and his generosity is manifested to all who call upon him. 13 Indeed, “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Luke 4:1-13

Chapter 4

Jesus Is Tempted by the Devil.[a] Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, where he was tempted by the devil. During that time he ate nothing, and at the end of it he was famished.

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to be transformed into bread.” Jesus answered him: “As it states in Scripture:

‘Man does not live by bread alone.’ ”

Then the devil led him up and showed him in a single instant all the kingdoms of the world, saying to him, “To you will I give all this dominion with its accompanying glory, for it has been delivered into my power, and I can bestow it on whomever I choose. All this will be yours if you worship me.” Jesus answered him: “Scripture says:

‘You shall worship the Lord your God,
and him alone shall you serve.’ ”

Next the devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the summit of the temple. Then he said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for according to Scripture:

‘He will command his angels concerning you,
    to protect you,’

11 and:

‘With their hands they will raise you up
lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

12 Jesus answered him, “Scripture says:

‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”

13 When the devil had ended all his tempting, he departed from him until an opportune time.
