The Book of Immanuel

Chapter 6

Isaiah’s Call.[a] In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a high and lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the temple. In attendance above him were seraphim.[b] Each of them had six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with the third pair they flew. And they called out to one another,

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.
The entire earth is filled with his glory.”

The voices of those who called out shook the thresholds, and the temple was filled with smoke. Then I said,

“Woe is me! I am doomed.
For I am a man of unclean lips,
and I live among a people of unclean lips,
yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, holding in his hand a burning coal that he had removed from the altar with a pair of tongs. He touched my mouth with it and said,

“Now that this has touched your lips,
    your guilt has been removed
and your sin has been blotted out.”

I then heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me!”

Isaiah 6:9-13

Then he replied: Go forth and tell this people:

No matter how carefully you listen,
    you will not understand.
You will continue to look,
    but you will not comprehend.
10 Make the minds of this people dull;
    stop up their ears
    and close their eyes.
Otherwise their eyes will see,
    their ears will hear,
their hearts will understand,
and they will change their ways
    and be healed.

11 Then I asked, “How long, O Lord?” He replied:

Until the cities lie in ruins
    and become deserted,
until the houses are unoccupied
and the land lies completely desolate,
12 until the Lord drives the people far away
and the country will be totally abandoned.
13 Even if a tenth of the people remain there,
that area too will be destroyed,
like a terebinth or an oak
    whose stump remains when it is felled;
the holy seed is its stump.

Psalm 138

Psalm 138[a]

Thanksgiving for God’s Favor

Of David.

I offer you thanks, O Lord, with all my heart;[b]
before the “gods” I sing your praise.
I bow down toward your holy temple
    and I praise your name[c]
for your kindness and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things
    your name and your word.
On the day I cried out, you answered me
and granted strength to my spirit.
[d]All the kings of the earth will praise you, O Lord,
when they hear the words of your mouth.
They will sing of the ways of the Lord:
“How great is the Lord’s glory!”
For though the Lord is exalted, he cares for the lowly,[e]
but he remains far distant from the proud.
Although I walk in the midst of hostility,
    you preserve my life.
You stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
and with your right hand[f] you deliver me.
The Lord will fulfill his plan for me.
    Your kindness, O Lord, endures forever;
do not forsake the work of your hands.[g]

The Resurrection[a]

The Resurrection of Christ

Chapter 15

The Risen Christ, Foundation of Our Faith.[b] And now, brethren, I want to remind you of the gospel I proclaimed to you, which you received and in which you stand firm. Through it you are also being saved, provided that you are holding fast to what I proclaimed to you. If not, then you have believed in vain.

[c]For I handed on to you as of primary importance what I received: that Christ died for our sins, in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried and that he was raised to life on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and later to the Twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred of the brethren at one time, most of whom are still alive, although some have fallen asleep.[d] After that he appeared to James,[e] and then to all the apostles.

Last of all, he appeared to me, as to one born abnormally. For I am the least of the apostles. I am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the Church of God. 10 However, by the grace of God I am what I am, and the grace he has bestowed upon me has not proved to be fruitless. Indeed, I have worked harder than any of them—although that should not be credited to me but to the grace of God within me. 11 But whether it was I or they, this is what we preach and what you have come to believe.

Luke 5:1-11

Chapter 5

Jesus Calls the First Disciples.[a] One day, as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with people crowding around him to hear the word of God, he caught sight of two boats at the water’s edge. The fishermen had gotten out of the boats and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we worked hard throughout the night and caught nothing; but if you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done this, they caught such a great number of fish that their nets were beginning to tear. Therefore, they signaled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats to the point that they were in danger of sinking.

When Simon Peter saw what had happened, he fell at the knees of Jesus, saying, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” For he and all of his companions were amazed at the catch they had made. 10 So too were Simon’s partners James and John, the sons of Zebedee. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will be catching men.” 11 When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.
