Psalm 3

Psalm 3[a]

A psalm of David, written when he fled from his son Absalom.[b]

Lord, how[c] numerous are my enemies!
Many attack me.[d]
Many say about me,
“God will not deliver him.”[e] (Selah)[f]
But you, Lord, are a shield that protects me;[g]
you are my glory[h] and the one who restores me.[i]
To the Lord I cried out,[j]
and he answered me from his holy hill.[k] (Selah)
I rested and slept;
I awoke,[l] for the Lord protects[m] me.
I am not afraid[n] of the multitude of people[o]
who attack me from all directions.[p]
Rise up,[q] Lord!
Deliver me, my God!
Yes,[r] you will strike[s] all my enemies on the jaw;
you will break the teeth[t] of the wicked.[u]
The Lord delivers;[v]
you show favor to your people.[w] (Selah)

1 Kings 8:22-30

Solomon Prays for Israel

22 Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in front of the entire assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward the sky.[a] 23 He prayed:[b] “O Lord, God of Israel, there is no god like you in heaven above or on earth below! You maintain covenantal loyalty[c] to your servants who obey you with sincerity.[d] 24 You have kept your word to your servant, my father David;[e] this very day you have fulfilled what you promised.[f] 25 Now, O Lord, God of Israel, keep the promise you made to your servant, my father David, when you said, ‘You will never fail to have a successor ruling before me on the throne of Israel,[g] provided that your descendants watch their step[h] and serve me as you have done.’[i] 26 Now, O God of Israel, may the promise you made[j] to your servant, my father David, be realized.[k]

27 “God does not really live on the earth![l] Look, if the sky and the highest heaven cannot contain you, how much less this temple I have built! 28 But respond favorably to[m] your servant’s prayer and his request for help, O Lord my God. Answer[n] the desperate prayer[o] your servant is presenting to you[p] today. 29 Night and day may you watch over this temple, the place where you promised you would live.[q] May you answer your servant’s prayer for this place.[r] 30 Respond to the request of your servant and your people Israel for this place.[s] Hear from inside your heavenly dwelling place[t] and respond favorably.[u]

Mark 13:9-23

Persecution of Disciples

“You must watch out for yourselves. You will be handed over[a] to councils[b] and beaten in the synagogues.[c] You will stand before governors and kings[d] because of me, as a witness to them. 10 First the gospel must be preached to all nations. 11 When they arrest you and hand you over for trial,[e] do not worry about what to speak. But say whatever is given you at that time,[f] for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12 Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against[g] parents and have them put to death. 13 You will be hated by everyone because of my name.[h] But the one who endures to the end will be saved.[i]

The Abomination of Desolation

14 “But when you see the abomination of desolation[j] standing where it[k] should not be” (let the reader understand),[l] “then those in Judea must flee[m] to the mountains. 15 The one on the roof[n] must not come down or go inside to take anything out of his house.[o] 16 The one in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. 17 Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days! 18 Pray that it may not be in winter. 19 For in those days there will be suffering[p] unlike anything that has happened[q] from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, or ever will happen. 20 And if the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would be saved. But because of the elect, whom he chose, he has cut them[r] short. 21 Then[s] if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’[t] or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe him. 22 For false messiahs[u] and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, the elect. 23 Be careful! I have told you everything ahead of time.
