Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
20 The Lord repaid[a] me for my godly deeds;[b]
he rewarded[c] my blameless behavior.[d]
21 For I have obeyed the Lord’s commands;[e]
I have not rebelled against my God.[f]
22 For I am aware of all his regulations,[g]
and I do not reject his rules.[h]
23 I was innocent before him,
and kept myself from sinning.[i]
24 The Lord rewarded me for my godly deeds;[j]
he took notice of my blameless behavior.[k]
25 You prove to be loyal[l] to one who is faithful;[m]
you prove to be trustworthy[n] to one who is innocent.[o]
26 You prove to be reliable[p] to one who is blameless,
but you prove to be deceptive[q] to one who is perverse.[r]
27 For you deliver oppressed[s] people,
but you bring down those who have a proud look.[t]
28 Indeed,[u] you light my lamp, Lord.[v]
My God[w] illuminates the darkness around me.[x]
29 Indeed,[y] with your help[z] I can charge against[aa] an army;[ab]
by my God’s power[ac] I can jump over a wall.[ad]
30 The one true God acts in a faithful manner;[ae]
the Lord’s promise[af] is reliable.[ag]
He is a shield to all who take shelter[ah] in him.
8 In the middle of the night he was startled[a] and turned over.[b] Now[c] he saw a woman[d] lying beside him![e] 9 He said, “Who are you?”[f] She replied, “I am Ruth, your servant.[g] Marry your servant,[h] for you are a guardian of the family interests.”[i] 10 He said, “May you be rewarded[j] by the Lord, my dear![k] This act of devotion[l] is greater than what you did before.[m] For you have not sought to marry[n] one of the young men, whether rich or poor.[o] 11 Now, my dear, don’t worry![p] I intend to do for you everything you propose,[q] for everyone in the village[r] knows that you are a worthy woman.[s] 12 Now yes, it is true that[t] I am a guardian,[u] but there is another guardian who is a closer relative than I am. 13 Remain here tonight. Then in the morning, if he agrees to marry you,[v] fine,[w] let him do so.[x] But if he does not want to do so, I promise, as surely as the Lord lives, to marry you.[y] Sleep here until morning.”[z] 14 So she slept beside him[aa] until morning. She woke up while it was still dark.[ab] Boaz thought,[ac] “No one must know that a woman visited the threshing floor.”[ad] 15 Then he said, “Hold out the shawl[ae] you are wearing[af] and grip it tightly.” As she held it tightly, he measured out about sixty pounds[ag] of barley into the shawl[ah] and put it on her shoulders. Then he[ai] went into town, 16 and she returned to her mother-in-law.
Ruth Returns to Naomi
When Ruth returned to her mother-in-law, Naomi[aj] asked,[ak] “How did things turn out for you,[al] my daughter?” Ruth[am] told her about all the man had done for her. 17 She said, “He gave me these sixty pounds of barley, for he said to me,[an] ‘Do not go to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’”[ao] 18 Then Naomi[ap] said, “Stay put,[aq] my daughter, until you know how the matter turns out. For the man will not rest until he has taken care of the matter today.”
The Prediction of Peter’s Denial
31 When[a] Judas[b] had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him,[c] God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him right away.[d] 33 Children, I am still with you for a little while. You will look for me,[e] and just as I said to the Jewish religious leaders,[f] ‘Where I am going you cannot come,’[g] now I tell you the same.[h]
34 “I give you a new commandment—to love[i] one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.[j] 35 Everyone[k] will know by this that you are my disciples—if you have love for one another.”
