Job’s Confession
42 Then Job answered the Lord:
2 “I know that you can do all things;
no purpose of yours can be thwarted;
3 you asked,[a] ‘Who is this who darkens counsel without knowledge?’
But[b] I have declared without understanding[c]
things too wonderful for me to know.[d]
4 You said,[e] ‘Pay attention, and I will speak;
I will question you, and you will answer me.’
5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
but now my eye has seen you.[f]
6 Therefore I despise myself,[g]
and I repent in dust and ashes!”
10 So the Lord[a] restored what Job had lost[b] after he prayed for his friends,[c] and the Lord doubled[d] all that had belonged to Job. 11 So they came to him, all his brothers and sisters and all who had known him before, and they dined[e] with him in his house. They comforted him and consoled him for all the trouble the Lord had brought on him, and each one gave him a piece of silver[f] and a gold ring.[g]
12 So the Lord blessed the second part of Job’s life more than the first. He had 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. 13 And he also had seven sons[h] and three daughters. 14 The first daughter he named Jemimah,[i] the second Keziah,[j] and the third Keren-Happuch.[k] 15 Nowhere in all the land could women be found who were as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance alongside their brothers.
16 After this Job lived 140 years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17 And so Job died, old and full of days.
Psalm 34[a]
By David, when he pretended to be insane before Abimelech, causing the king to send him away.[b]
34 I will praise[c] the Lord at all times;
my mouth will continually praise him.[d]
2 I will boast[e] in the Lord;
let the oppressed hear and rejoice.[f]
3 Magnify the Lord with me.
Let us praise[g] his name together.
4 I sought the Lord’s help[h] and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.
5 Look to him and be radiant;
do not let your faces be ashamed.[i]
6 This oppressed man cried out and the Lord heard;
he saved him[j] from all his troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord camps around
the Lord’s[k] loyal followers[l] and delivers them.[m]
8 Taste[n] and see that the Lord is good.
How blessed[o] is the one[p] who takes shelter in him.[q]
19 The godly[a] face many dangers,[b]
but the Lord saves[c] them[d] from each one of them.
20 He protects[e] all his bones;[f]
not one of them is broken.[g]
21 Evil people self-destruct;[h]
those who hate the godly are punished.[i]
22 The Lord rescues his servants;[j]
all who take shelter in him escape punishment.[k]
23 And the others[a] who became priests were numerous, because death prevented them[b] from continuing in office,[c] 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently since he lives forever. 25 So he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. 26 For it is indeed fitting for us to have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separate from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 He has no need to do every day what those priests do, to offer sacrifices first for their own sins and then for the sins of the people, since he did this in offering himself once for all. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men subject to weakness,[d] but the word of solemn affirmation that came after the law appoints a son made perfect forever.
Healing Blind Bartimaeus
46 They came to Jericho. As Jesus[a] and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the road. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to shout,[b] “Jesus, Son of David,[c] have mercy[d] on me!” 48 Many scolded[e] him to get him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So[f] they called the blind man and said to him, “Have courage! Get up! He is calling you.” 50 He threw off his cloak, jumped up, and came to Jesus. 51 Then[g] Jesus said to him,[h] “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied, “Rabbi,[i] let me see again.”[j] 52 Jesus said to him, “Go, your faith has healed you.” Immediately he regained[k] his sight and followed him on the road.
