Psalm 1

Book 1 (Psalms 1-41)

Psalm 1[a]

How blessed[b] is the one[c] who does not follow[d] the advice[e] of the wicked,[f]
or stand in the pathway[g] with sinners,
or sit in the assembly[h] of scoffers.[i]
Instead[j] he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands;[k]
he meditates on[l] his commands[m] day and night.
He is like[n] a tree planted by flowing streams;[o]
it[p] yields[q] its fruit at the proper time,[r]
and its leaves never fall off.[s]
He succeeds in everything he attempts.[t]
Not so with the wicked!
Instead[u] they are like wind-driven chaff.[v]
For this reason[w] the wicked cannot withstand[x] judgment,[y]
nor can sinners join the assembly of the godly.[z]
Certainly[aa] the Lord guards the way of the godly,[ab]
but the way of the wicked ends in destruction.[ac]

Proverbs 30:18-33

18 There are three things that are too wonderful for me,[a]
four that I do not understand:
19 the way[b] of an eagle in the sky,
the way of a snake on a rock,
the way of a ship in the sea,
and the way of a man with a woman.[c]
20 This is the way[d] of an adulterous[e] woman:
she has eaten and wiped her mouth[f]
and has said, “I have not done wrong.”[g]
21 Under three things the earth has trembled,[h]
and under four things it cannot bear up:
22 under a servant[i] who becomes king,
under a fool who becomes stuffed with food,[j]
23 under an unloved woman[k] who becomes married,
and under a female servant who dispossesses[l] her mistress.
24 There are four things on earth that are small,[m]
but they are exceedingly wise:[n]
25 ants are creatures with little strength,
but they prepare[o] their food in the summer;
26 rock badgers[p] are creatures with little power,
but they make their homes in the crags;
27 locusts have no king,
but they all go forward by ranks;[q]
28 a lizard[r] you can catch with the hand,
but it gets into the palaces of the king.[s]
29 There are three things that are magnificent[t] in their step,
four things that move about magnificently:[u]
30 a lion, mightiest[v] of the beasts,
who does not retreat from anything;
31 a strutting rooster,[w] a male goat,
and a king with his army around him.[x]
32 If you have done foolishly by exalting yourself[y]
or if you have planned evil,
put[z] your hand over your mouth!
33 For as the churning[aa] of milk produces butter
and as punching the nose produces blood,
so stirring up anger[ab] produces strife.[ac]

Romans 11:25-32

25 For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters,[a] so that you may not be conceited: A partial hardening has happened to Israel[b] until the full number[c] of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so[d] all Israel will be saved, as it is written:

The Deliverer will come out of Zion;
he will remove ungodliness from Jacob.
27 And this is my covenant with them,[e]
when I take away their sins.[f]

28 In regard to the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but in regard to election they are dearly loved for the sake of the fathers. 29 For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. 30 Just as you were formerly disobedient to God, but have now received mercy due to their disobedience, 31 so they too have now been disobedient in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now[g] receive mercy. 32 For God has consigned all people to disobedience so that he may show mercy to them all.[h]
