Psalm 73:21-28

21 Thus my heart was embittered,
    and I was pierced in my feelings.
22 I was a brute and did not understand;
    I was as a beast before You.

23 Nevertheless I am continually with You;
    You have held me by my right hand.
24 You will guide me with Your counsel,
    and afterward receive me to glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but You?
    And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides You.
26 My flesh and my heart fails,
    but God is the strength of my heart
    and my portion forever.

27 For those who are far from You will perish;
    You destroy everyone who is unfaithful to You.
28 But it is good for me to draw near to God;
    I have taken my refuge in the Lord God,
    that I may declare all Your works.

Proverbs 22:1-21

22 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches,
    and loving favor rather than silver and gold.

The rich and poor have this in common,
    the Lord is the maker of them all.

A prudent man foresees the evil and hides himself,
    but the simple pass on and are punished.

By humility and the fear of the Lord
    are riches, and honor, and life.

Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse;
    he who guards his soul will be far from them.

Train up a child in the way he should go,
    and when he is old he will not depart from it.

The rich rules over the poor,
    and the borrower is servant to the lender.

He who sows iniquity will reap vanity,
    and the rod of his anger will fail.

He who has a bountiful eye will be blessed,
    for he gives of his bread to the poor.

10 Cast out the scorner, and contention will go out;
    yes, strife and reproach will cease.

11 He who loves pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips
    the king will be his friend.

12 The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge,
    and He overthrows the words of the transgressor.

13 The slothful man says, “There is a lion without!
    I will be slain in the streets!”

14 The mouth of an immoral woman is a deep pit;
    he who is detested by the Lord will fall therein.

15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child,
    but the rod of correction will drive it far from him.

16 He who oppresses the poor to increase his riches,
    and he who gives to the rich, will surely come to want.

Thirty Sayings of the Wise

Saying One

17 Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise,
    and apply your heart to my knowledge;
18 for it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you;
    they will readily be fitted in your lips.
19 That your trust may be in the Lord,
    I have made known to you this day, even to you.
20 Have I not written to you excellent things
    in counsels and knowledge,
21 that I might make you know the certainty of the words of truth,
    that you might answer the words of truth
    to those who send to you?

Romans 3:9-20

There Is None Righteous

What then? Are we better than they? No, not at all. For we have already charged that both Jews and Gentiles are all under sin. 10 As it is written:

“There is none righteous, no, not one;[a]
11     there is no one who understands;
    there is no one who seeks after God.[b]
12 They have all turned aside;
    together they have become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
    no, not one.”[c]
13 “Their throats are an open grave;
    with their tongues they have used deceit”;
“the poison of vipers is under their lips”;[d]
14     “their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”[e]
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;[f]
16     destruction and misery are in their paths;[g]
17 and they do not know the way of peace.”[h]
18     “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”[i]

19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and all the world may become accountable to God. 20 Therefore by the works of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.
