1 Kings 2:1-11

David’s Dying Instructions to Solomon

As the time approached for David to die,(A) he ordered his son Solomon, “As for me, I am going the way of all of the earth.(B) Be strong and be a man,(C) and keep your obligation to the Lord your God to walk in his ways and to keep his statutes, commands, ordinances, and decrees. This is written in the law of Moses, so that you will have success in everything you do(D) and wherever you turn, and so that the Lord will fulfill his promise that he made to me: ‘If your sons take care to walk faithfully before me with all their heart and all their soul,(E) you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’(F)

“You also know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me(G) and what he did to the two commanders of Israel’s army, Abner son of Ner(H) and Amasa son of Jether.(I) He murdered them in a time of peace to avenge blood shed in war. He spilled that blood on his own waistband and on the sandals of his feet.[a] Act according to your wisdom, and do not let his gray head descend to Sheol in peace.

“Show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite and let them be among those who eat at your table(J) because they supported me when I fled from your brother Absalom.(K)

“Keep an eye on Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim who is with you. He uttered malicious curses against me the day I went to Mahanaim.(L) But he came down to meet me at the Jordan River, and I swore to him by the Lord, ‘I will never kill you with the sword.’(M) So don’t let him go unpunished, for you are a wise man. You know how to deal with him to bring his gray head down to Sheol with blood.”

10 Then David rested with his ancestors(N) and was buried in the city of David.(O) 11 The length of time David reigned over Israel was forty years: he reigned seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.(P)

John 4:7-26

A woman of Samaria came to draw water.(A)

“Give me a drink,” Jesus said to her, because his disciples had gone into town to buy food.

“How is it that you, a Jew,(B) ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan(C) woman?” she asked him. For Jews do not associate with[a] Samaritans.[b]

10 Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God,(D) and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would ask him, and he would give you living water.”(E)

11 “Sir,”(F) said the woman, “you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this ‘living water’? 12 You aren’t greater than our father Jacob,(G) are you? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock.”

13 Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again. 14 But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again.(H) In fact, the water I will give him will become a well[c](I) of water springing up in him for eternal life.”(J)

15 “Sir,” the woman said to him, “give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and come here to draw water.”

16 “Go call your husband,” he told her, “and come back here.”

17 “I don’t have a husband,” she answered.

“You have correctly said, ‘I don’t have a husband,’” Jesus said. 18 “For you’ve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”

19 “Sir,” the woman replied, “I see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(K) but you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.”(L)

21 Jesus told her, “Believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.(M) 23 But an hour is coming, and is now here,(N) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth.[d] Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit,(O) and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth.”(P)

25 The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah(Q) is coming” (who is called Christ(R)). “When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

26 Jesus told her, “I, the one speaking to you, am he.”(S)
