Psalm 21
Thanksgiving for Victory
To the leader. A Psalm of David.
1 In your strength the king rejoices, O Lord,
and in your help how greatly he exults!(A)
2 You have given him his heart’s desire
and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah(B)
3 For you meet him with rich blessings;
you set a crown of fine gold on his head.(C)
4 He asked you for life; you gave it to him—
length of days forever and ever.(D)
5 His glory is great through your help;
splendor and majesty you bestow on him.(E)
6 You bestow on him blessings forever;
you make him glad with the joy of your presence.
7 For the king trusts in the Lord,
and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved.(F)
8 Your hand will find out all your enemies;
your right hand will find out those who hate you.(G)
9 You will make them like a fiery furnace
when you appear.
The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
and fire will consume them.(H)
10 You will destroy their offspring from the earth
and their children from among humankind.(I)
11 If they plan evil against you,
if they devise mischief, they will not succeed.(J)
12 For you will put them to flight;
you will aim at their faces with your bows.(K)
13 Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength!
We will sing and praise your power.(L)
Philistine Attack Repulsed
17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up in search of David, but David heard about it and went down to the stronghold.(A) 18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the valley of Rephaim.(B) 19 David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” The Lord said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.”(C) 20 So David came to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. He said, “The Lord has burst forth against my enemies before me like a bursting flood.” Therefore that place is called Baal-perazim.[a](D) 21 The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them away.(E)
22 Once again the Philistines came up and were spread out in the valley of Rephaim.(F) 23 When David inquired of the Lord, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear and come upon them opposite the balsam trees.(G) 24 When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then be on the alert, for then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.”(H) 25 David did just as the Lord had commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines from Geba all the way to Gezer.(I)
The Unbelief of Jesus’s Brothers
7 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He did not wish to go about in Judea because the Jews were looking for an opportunity to kill him.(A) 2 Now the Jewish Festival of Booths[a] was near.(B) 3 So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea so that your disciples also may see the works you are doing,(C) 4 for no one who wants[b] to be widely known acts in secret. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 (For not even his brothers believed in him.)(D) 6 Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.(E) 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify against it that its works are evil.(F) 8 Go to the festival yourselves. I am not[c] going to this festival, for my time has not yet fully come.” 9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee.
