Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Joy in the Salvation of Yahweh
For the music director. A psalm of David.[a]
21 O Yahweh, the king will rejoice in your strength,
and how greatly he will delight in your help.[b]
2 You have given him the desire of his heart,
and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah
3 For you meet him with blessings of good things.
You set on his head a crown of fine gold.
4 He asked life from you; you gave it to him—
length of days forever and ever.
5 His honor is great because of your help.[c]
Splendor and majesty you have bestowed upon him.
6 For you set on him blessings forever.
You make him glad with the joy of your presence.
7 Because the king trusts Yahweh,
and through the steadfast love[d] of the Most High
he shall not be moved.
8 Your hand will find all your enemies;
your right hand will find those who hate you.
9 You will make them like your fiery furnace
at the time of your appearance.
Yahweh will swallow them in his wrath
and fire will consume them.
10 You will destroy their offspring[e] from the earth,
and their descendants[f] from among the children of humankind.
11 Though they have plotted[g] evil against you,
though they have planned a scheme, they will not prevail.
12 For you will turn them to flight;[h]
you will aim arrows on your bowstrings at their faces.
13 Be exalted, O Yahweh, in your strength,
and we sing and praise your power.
11 So Hiram, the king of Tyre, sent messengers to David, along with cedar trees and craftsmen skilled in wood and in stone masonry,[a] and they built a house for David. 12 David realized that Yahweh had established him as king over Israel and that he had exalted his kingdom because of his people Israel. 13 David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem after he came from Hebron, and more sons and daughters were born to him. 14 These are the names of the ones born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua and Shobab and Nathan and Solomon; 15 Ibhar and Elishua and Nepheg and Japhia; 16 Elishama and Eliada and Eliphelet.
Exhortation to Patience
7 Therefore be patient, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the soil, being patient concerning it until it receives the early and late rains. 8 You also be patient. Strengthen your hearts, because the coming of the Lord is near. 9 Brothers, do not complain against one another, in order that you may not be judged. Behold, the judge stands before the doors! 10 Brothers, take as an example of perseverance and endurance the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider blessed those who have endured. You have heard about the patient endurance of Job, and you saw the outcome from the Lord, that the Lord is compassionate and merciful. 12 Now above all, my brothers, do not swear either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no, no, in order that you may not fall under judgment.
