Psalm 21

Thanksgiving for the King

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

21 Lord, the king rejoices because of your strength;
    he is so happy when you ·save him [give him victory/help]!
You gave the king ·what he wanted [L the desire of his heart]
    and did not ·refuse [withhold] ·what he asked for [L the request of his lips]. ·Selah [Interlude]

You put ·good things [rich blessings] before him
    and placed a gold crown on his head.
He asked you for life,
    and you gave it to him,
    ·so his years go on and on [L length of days forever and ever].
He has great glory because you gave him ·victories [help];
    you gave him ·honor [splendor] and ·praise [majesty].
You ·always [forever] gave him blessings;
    you made him glad because ·you were with him [L of the joy of your presence].
The king truly ·trusts [has confidence in] the Lord.
    Because God Most High always ·loves [is loyal toward] him,
    he will not be ·overwhelmed [moved].
Your hand ·is against [L will find out] all your enemies;
    ·those who hate you will feel your power [L your right hand will find out those who hate you].
When ·you [L the Lord] appear,
    you will burn them as in a furnace.
In your anger you will swallow them up,
    and fire will burn them up.
10 You will destroy their ·families [offspring] from the earth;
    their ·children [L seed] will not live.
11 They made evil plans against you,
    but ·their traps [L the schemes they devise] won’t ·work [succeed].
12 You will make them turn their backs
    when you aim your arrows at ·them [L their faces].
13 Be ·supreme [exalted], Lord, in your power.
    We sing and praise your ·greatness [strength].

2 Samuel 5:11-16

David Consolidates His Kingdom(A)

11 Hiram king of the city of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, carpenters, and ·stonecutters [stonemasons]. They built a ·palace [L house] for David. 12 Then David ·knew [realized] that the Lord really had ·made [confirmed; established] him king ·of [over] Israel and that the Lord had ·made his kingdom great [blessed/exalted his kingdom] ·because the Lord loved [for the sake of] his people Israel.

13 After he came from Hebron, David took for himself more ·slave women [concubines; C a secondary wife; 3:7] and wives in Jerusalem. More sons and daughters were born to David. 14 These are the names of the sons born to David in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.

James 5:7-12

Be Patient

[L Therefore] Brothers and sisters [C fellow believers], be patient until the Lord comes again. [L See; T Behold,] A farmer patiently waits for his ·valuable [precious] ·crop [fruit] to grow from the earth and for it to receive the ·autumn and spring [L early and late] rains [Deut. 11:14]. You, too, must be patient. ·Do not give up hope [L Strengthen your hearts], because ·the Lord is coming soon [L the Lord’s coming draws near/is at hand]. Brothers and sisters [C fellow believers], do not ·complain [grumble] against each other or you will be judged guilty [Matt. 7:1]. ·And [L Look; T Behold] the Judge is ·ready to come [L standing at the door]! 10 Brothers and sisters [C fellow believers], follow the example of the prophets who spoke ·for [L in the name of] the Lord. They suffered many hard things, but they ·were patient [endured]. 11 [L Look; or Indeed] ·We say they are happy [or We consider them blessed] because they ·did not give up [endured; persevered]. You have heard about Job’s ·patience [or endurance; perseverance], and you know the Lord’s purpose for him in the end. You know the Lord is full of mercy and is ·kind [compassionate].

Be Careful What You Say

12 My brothers and sisters [C fellow believers], above all, do not ·use an oath when you make a promise [swear; take a vow]. Don’t use the name of heaven, earth, or anything else to prove what you say. ·When you mean yes, say only yes, and when you mean no, say only no [T Let your “Yes” be yes and your “No” be no; Matt. 5:33–37] so you will not be ·judged guilty [condemned].
