Psalm 4

Evening Prayer of Trust in God.

[a]For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.

(A)Answer me when (B)I call, O God [b]of my righteousness!
You have [c](C)relieved me in my distress;
Be (D)gracious to me and (E)hear my prayer.

O sons of men, how long will (F)my [d]honor become (G)a reproach?
How long will you love (H)what is worthless and aim at (I)deception? [e]Selah.
But know that the Lord has [f](J)set apart the (K)godly man for Himself;
The Lord (L)hears when I call to Him.

[g](M)Tremble, [h](N)and do not sin;
[i](O)Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
Offer [j]the (P)sacrifices of righteousness,
And (Q)trust in the Lord.

Many are saying, “(R)Who will show us any good?”
(S)Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O Lord!
You have put (T)gladness in my heart,
More than when their grain and new wine abound.
In peace I will [k]both (U)lie down and sleep,
For You alone, O Lord, make me to (V)dwell in safety.

Daniel 9:1-19

Daniel’s Prayer for His People

In the first year of (A)Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of Median descent, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans— in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, observed in the books the number of the years which was revealed as the word of the Lord to (B)Jeremiah the prophet for the completion of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, (C)seventy years. So I [a]gave my attention to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth and ashes. I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed and said, “Alas, O Lord, the (D)great and awesome God, who (E)keeps His covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments, (F)we have sinned, committed iniquity, acted wickedly and (G)rebelled, even (H)turning aside from Your commandments and ordinances. Moreover, we have not (I)listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, our princes, our fathers and all the people of the land.

(J)Righteousness belongs to You, O Lord, but to us [b](K)open shame, as it is this day—to the men of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those who are nearby and those who are far away in (L)all the countries to which You have driven them, because of their unfaithful deeds which they have committed against You. [c]Open shame belongs to us, O Lord, to our kings, our princes and our fathers, because we have sinned against You. To the Lord our God belong (M)compassion and forgiveness, [d]for we have (N)rebelled against Him; 10 nor have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in His [e]teachings which He (O)set before us through His servants the prophets. 11 Indeed (P)all Israel has transgressed Your law and turned aside, not obeying Your voice; so the (Q)curse has been poured out on us, along with the oath which is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, for we have sinned against Him. 12 Thus He has (R)confirmed His words which He had spoken against us and against our [f](S)rulers who ruled us, to bring on us great calamity; for under the whole heaven there has (T)not been done anything like what was done to Jerusalem. 13 As it is written in the (U)law of Moses, all this calamity has come on us; yet we have (V)not [g]sought the favor of the Lord our God by (W)turning from our iniquity and [h]giving attention to Your truth. 14 Therefore the Lord has [i](X)kept the calamity in store and brought it on us; for the Lord our God is (Y)righteous with respect to all His deeds which He has done, but we have not obeyed His voice.

15 “And now, O Lord our God, who have (Z)brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and have (AA)made a name for Yourself, as it is this day—we have sinned, we have been wicked. 16 O Lord, in accordance with all Your [j]righteous acts, let now Your (AB)anger and Your wrath turn away from Your city Jerusalem, Your (AC)holy mountain; for because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people have become a (AD)reproach to all those around us. 17 So now, our God, listen to the prayer of Your servant and to his supplications, and for [k]Your sake, O Lord, (AE)let Your face shine on Your (AF)desolate sanctuary. 18 O my God, (AG)incline Your ear and hear! Open Your eyes and (AH)see our desolations and the city which is (AI)called by Your name; for we are not [l](AJ)presenting our supplications before You on account of [m]any merits of our own, but on account of Your great compassion. 19 O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and take action! For Your own sake, O my God, (AK)do not delay, because Your city and Your people are called by Your name.”

1 John 2:18-25

18 Children, (A)it is the last hour; and just as you heard that (B)antichrist is coming, (C)even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. 19 (D)They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, (E)so that [a]it would be shown that they all are not of us. 20 [b]But you have an (F)anointing from (G)the Holy One, and (H)you all know. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but (I)because you do know it, and [c]because no lie is (J)of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but (K)the one who denies that Jesus is the [d]Christ? This is (L)the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 (M)Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 As for you, let that abide in you which you heard (N)from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also (O)will abide in the Son and in the Father.

The Promise Is Eternal Life

25 (P)This is the promise which He Himself [e]made to us: eternal life.
