Jonah 3:1-5

God Calls and Jonah Obeys

The ·Lord spoke his word [L word of the Lord came] to Jonah ·again [a second time] and said, “Get up, go to the great city Nineveh [1:2], and ·preach [cry out] to it what I tell you to say.”

So Jonah obeyed the Lord and got up and went to Nineveh. It was a very large city; just to walk ·across it [or through it all] took a person three days. After Jonah had entered the city and walked for one day, he preached to the people, saying, “After forty days, Nineveh will be ·destroyed [overthrown]!”

The people of Nineveh believed God. They ·announced that they would fast [called for/decreed a fast], and they put on ·rough cloth [burlap; sackcloth; C to show their sorrow and repentance]. All the people in the city did this, from the ·most important to the least important [L greatest to the least].

Jonah 3:10

10 When God saw what the people did, that they stopped doing evil, he ·changed his mind [relented] and did not carry out the ·destruction [disaster; punishment] he had threatened.

Psalm 62:5-12

I ·find rest [wait quietly] in God;
    ·only he gives me hope [L for my hope is in him].
He is my rock [61:2] and my ·salvation [victory].
    He is my ·defender [fortress];
    I will not be ·defeated [shaken].
My ·honor [glory] and ·salvation [victory] come from God.
    He is my ·mighty [strong] rock and my ·protection [refuge].

People, ·trust [have confidence in] God all the time.
    ·Tell him all your problems [L Pour out your heart before him],
because God is our ·protection [refuge]. ·Selah [Interlude]

The least of people are only a ·breath [vapor; bubble; vanity],
    and even the greatest are just a ·lie [delusion].
On the scales, they ·weigh nothing [L go up];
    together they are only a ·breath [vapor; bubble; vanity].
10 Do not ·trust [have confidence] in ·force [oppression; extortion].
    Stealing is ·of no use [meaningless].
Even if you gain more riches,
    don’t ·put your trust in [L set your heart on] them.

11 God has said this once,
    and I have heard it ·over and over [L twice]:
    God is strong.
12 The Lord is ·loving [loyal].
    You ·reward [repay] people for what they have done [1 Pet. 1:17; Rev. 20:12–13; 22:12].

1 Corinthians 7:29-31

29 Brothers and sisters, this is what I mean: ·We do not have much time left [The time is short/limited/coming to an end]. So starting now, those who have wives should live as if they had no wives. 30 Those who are ·crying [weeping; mourning] should live as if they were not ·crying [weeping; mourning]. Those who ·are happy [rejoice] should live as if they were not ·happy [rejoicing]. Those who buy things should live as if they ·own [or could keep/hold on to] nothing. 31 Those who use ·the things of the world [L the world] should live as if they were not ·using [engrossed in; dependent upon] them, because this world in its present form ·will soon be gone [is passing away].

Mark 1:14-20

Jesus Announces the Good News(A)

14 After John was put in prison [C by Herod Antipas; cf. 6:14–29], Jesus went into Galilee, preaching the ·Good News [Gospel] ·from [about] God. 15 He said, “The ·right time has come [L time is fulfilled]. ·The kingdom of God [God’s sovereign rule] is ·near [at hand]. ·Change your hearts and lives [Turn from your sins; Repent] and believe the ·Good News [Gospel]!”

Jesus Chooses His First Followers(B)

16 When Jesus was walking by ·Lake Galilee [T the Sea of Galilee], he saw Simon [C Peter; cf. 3:16] and his brother Andrew ·throwing [casting] a net into the lake because they were fishermen. 17 Jesus said to them, “Come ·follow me [be my disciples], and I will ·make you [teach you how to] fish for people.” 18 So Simon and Andrew immediately left their nets and followed him.

19 Going a little farther, Jesus saw two more brothers, ·James and John, the sons of Zebedee [L James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John]. They were in a boat, ·mending [preparing] their nets. 20 Jesus immediately called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers and followed Jesus.
