Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 89
Perplexity about God’s Promises
A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.(A)
1 I will sing about the Lord’s faithful love forever;(B)
I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations
with my mouth.(C)
2 For I will declare,
“Faithful love is built up forever;
you establish your faithfulness in the heavens.”(D)
3 The Lord said,
“I have made a covenant with my chosen one;
I have sworn an oath to David my servant:
4 ‘I will establish your offspring forever
and build up your throne for all generations.’”(E)Selah
19 You once spoke in a vision to your faithful ones
and said, “I have granted help to a warrior;
I have exalted one chosen[a] from the people.(A)
20 I have found David my servant;
I have anointed him with my sacred oil.(B)
21 My hand will always be with him,
and my arm will strengthen him.(C)
22 The enemy will not oppress[b] him;
the wicked will not afflict him.(D)
23 I will crush his foes before him
and strike those who hate him.(E)
24 My faithfulness and love will be with him,
and through my name
his horn will be exalted.(F)
25 I will extend his power to the sea
and his right hand to the rivers.(G)
26 He will call to me, ‘You are my Father,(H)
my God, the rock of my salvation.’(I)
12 It was reported to King David, “The Lord has blessed Obed-edom’s family and all that belongs to him because of the ark of God.” So David went and had the ark of God brought up from Obed-edom’s house to the city of David with rejoicing.(A) 13 When those carrying the ark of the Lord advanced six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened calf.(B) 14 David was dancing[a] with all his might before the Lord wearing a linen ephod.(C) 15 He and the whole house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of the ram’s horn. 16 As the ark of the Lord was entering the city of David,(D) Saul’s daughter Michal looked down from the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart.
17 They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent David had pitched for it.(E) Then David offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings in the Lord’s presence. 18 When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of Armies. 19 Then he distributed a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake to each one in the entire Israelite community, both men and women.(F) Then all the people went home.
The Son Superior to Angels
5 For to which of the angels did he ever say,
or again,
6 Again, when he[d] brings his firstborn into the world,(B) he says,
7 And about the angels he says:
8 but to[i] the Son:
Your throne, God,
is forever and ever,
and the scepter of your kingdom
is a scepter of justice.(E)
9 You have loved righteousness
and hated lawlessness;
this is why God, your God,
has anointed you
with the oil of joy(F)
beyond your companions.[j][k]
10 And:
In the beginning, Lord,
you established the earth,
and the heavens are the works of your hands;(G)
11 they will perish, but you remain.
They will all wear out like clothing;(H)
12 you will roll them up like a cloak,[l]
and they will be changed like clothing.
But you are the same,
and your years will never end.[m](I)
13 Now to which of the angels has he ever said:
14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve those who are going to inherit salvation?(K)
