Psalm 28

A Prayer for Help[a]

28 O Lord, my defender, I call to you.
    Listen to my cry!
If you do not answer me,
    I will be among those who go down to the world of the dead.
Hear me when I cry to you for help,
    when I lift my hands toward your holy Temple.
Do not condemn me with the wicked,
    with those who do evil—
    those whose words are friendly,
    but who have hatred in their hearts.

(A)Punish them for what they have done,
    for the evil they have committed.
Punish them for all their deeds;
    give them what they deserve!
They take no notice of what the Lord has done
    or of what he has made;
so he will punish them
    and destroy them forever.

Give praise to the Lord;
    he has heard my cry for help.
The Lord protects and defends me;
    I trust in him.
He gives me help and makes me glad;
    I praise him with joyful songs.

The Lord protects his people;
    he defends and saves his chosen king.
Save your people, Lord,
    and bless those who are yours.
Be their shepherd,
    and take care of them forever.

Numbers 27:15-23

15 Moses prayed, 16 Lord God, source of all life, appoint, I pray, a man who can lead the people 17 (A)and can command them in battle, so that your community will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”

18 (B)The Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a capable man, and place your hands on his head. 19 Have him stand in front of Eleazar the priest and the whole community, and there before them all proclaim him as your successor. 20 Give him some of your own authority, so that the whole community of Israel will obey him. 21 (C)He will depend on Eleazar the priest, who will learn my will by using the Urim and Thummim.[a] In this way Eleazar will direct Joshua and the whole community of Israel in all their affairs.” 22 Moses did as the Lord had commanded him. He had Joshua stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole community. 23 (D)As the Lord had commanded, Moses put his hands on Joshua's head and proclaimed him as his successor.

2 Timothy 2:8-13

Remember Jesus Christ, who was raised from death, who was a descendant of David, as is taught in the Good News I preach. Because I preach the Good News, I suffer and I am even chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not in chains, 10 and so I endure everything for the sake of God's chosen people, in order that they too may obtain the salvation that comes through Christ Jesus and brings eternal glory. 11 This is a true saying:

“If we have died with him,
    we shall also live with him.
12 (A)If we continue to endure,
    we shall also rule with him.
If we deny him,
    he also will deny us.
13 If we are not faithful,
    he remains faithful,
    because he cannot be false to himself.”
