Psalm 78:1-4

Tell the Coming Generation

A Maskil[a] of (A)Asaph.

78 (B)Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
    incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
(C)I will open my mouth (D)in a parable;
    I will utter dark sayings from of old,
things that we have heard and known,
    that our (E)fathers have told us.
We will not (F)hide them from their children,
    but (G)tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
    and (H)the wonders that he has done.

Psalm 78:12-16

12 In the sight of their fathers (A)he performed wonders
    in the land of Egypt, in (B)the fields of Zoan.
13 He (C)divided the sea and let them pass through it,
    and made the waters (D)stand like a heap.
14 (E)In the daytime he led them with a cloud,
    and all the night with a fiery light.
15 He (F)split rocks in the wilderness
    and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.
16 He made streams come out of (G)the rock
    and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

Isaiah 48:17-21

17 Thus says the Lord,
    your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
    who teaches you to profit,
    who leads you in the way you should go.
18 (A)Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments!
    (B)Then your peace would have been like a river,
    and your righteousness like the waves of the sea;
19 (C)your offspring would have been like the sand,
    and your descendants like its grains;
their name would never be cut off
    or destroyed from before me.”

20 (D)Go out from Babylon, flee from (E)Chaldea,
    declare this (F)with a shout of joy, proclaim it,
send it out to the end of the earth;
    say, (G)“The Lord has redeemed his servant Jacob!”
21 (H)They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts;
    (I)he made water flow for them from the rock;
    he split the rock and the water gushed out.

James 4:11-16

11 (A)Do not speak evil against one another, brothers.[a] The one who speaks against a brother or (B)judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is only (C)one lawgiver and (D)judge, he who is able to save and (E)to destroy. But (F)who are you to judge your neighbor?

Boasting About Tomorrow

13 Come now, you who say, (G)“Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For (H)you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, (I)“If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. (J)All such boasting is evil.
