Psalm 78:1-4

Psalm 78

A maskil[a] of Asaph.

My people, hear my teaching;(A)
    listen to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth with a parable;(B)
    I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
things we have heard and known,
    things our ancestors have told us.(C)
We will not hide them from their descendants;(D)
    we will tell the next generation(E)
the praiseworthy deeds(F) of the Lord,
    his power, and the wonders(G) he has done.

Psalm 78:12-16

12 He did miracles(A) in the sight of their ancestors
    in the land of Egypt,(B) in the region of Zoan.(C)
13 He divided the sea(D) and led them through;
    he made the water stand up like a wall.(E)
14 He guided them with the cloud by day
    and with light from the fire all night.(F)
15 He split the rocks(G) in the wilderness
    and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag
    and made water flow down like rivers.

Isaiah 48:17-21

17 This is what the Lord says—
    your Redeemer,(A) the Holy One(B) of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
    who teaches(C) you what is best for you,
    who directs(D) you in the way(E) you should go.
18 If only you had paid attention(F) to my commands,
    your peace(G) would have been like a river,(H)
    your well-being(I) like the waves of the sea.
19 Your descendants(J) would have been like the sand,(K)
    your children like its numberless grains;(L)
their name would never be blotted out(M)
    nor destroyed from before me.”

20 Leave Babylon,
    flee(N) from the Babylonians!
Announce this with shouts of joy(O)
    and proclaim it.
Send it out to the ends of the earth;(P)
    say, “The Lord has redeemed(Q) his servant Jacob.”
21 They did not thirst(R) when he led them through the deserts;
    he made water flow(S) for them from the rock;
he split the rock
    and water gushed out.(T)

James 4:11-16

11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another.(A) Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister[a] or judges them(B) speaks against the law(C) and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it,(D) but sitting in judgment on it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge,(E) the one who is able to save and destroy.(F) But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?(G)

Boasting About Tomorrow

13 Now listen,(H) you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.”(I) 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.(J) 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will,(K) we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.(L)
