The Burning Bush

Now Moses was pasturing the flock of (A)Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the [a]west side of the wilderness and came to (B)Horeb, the (C)mountain of God. (D)The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of [b]a (E)bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed. So Moses said, “[c](F)I must turn aside now and see this [d]marvelous sight, why the bush is not burned up.” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, (G)God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Do not come near here; (H)remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” He said also, “(I)I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” (J)Then Moses hid his face, for he was (K)afraid to look at God.

The Lord said, “I have surely (L)seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt, and have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters, for I am aware of their sufferings. So I have come down (M)to deliver them from the [e]power of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a (N)good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of (O)the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. Now, behold, (P)the cry of the sons of Israel has come to Me; furthermore, I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians are oppressing them.

The Mission of Moses

10 Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, (Q)so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, “(R)Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 And He said, “Certainly (S)I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: (T)when you have brought the people out of Egypt, (U)you shall [f]worship God at this mountain.”

13 Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “[g](V)I AM WHO [h]I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘[i]I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 God, furthermore, said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘(W)The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My (X)memorial-name [j]to all generations.

Psalm 105:1-6

The Lord’s Wonderful Works in Behalf of Israel.

105 Oh (A)give thanks to the Lord, (B)call upon His name;
(C)Make known His deeds among the peoples.
Sing to Him, (D)sing praises to Him;
[a](E)Speak of all His [b]wonders.
[c]Glory in His holy name;
Let the (F)heart of those who seek the Lord be glad.
Seek the Lord and (G)His strength;
(H)Seek His face continually.
Remember His [d](I)wonders which He has done,
His marvels and the (J)judgments [e]uttered by His mouth,
O seed of (K)Abraham, His servant,
O sons of (L)Jacob, His (M)chosen ones!

Psalm 105:23-26

23 (A)Israel also came into Egypt;
Thus Jacob (B)sojourned in the land of Ham.
24 And He (C)caused His people to be very fruitful,
And made them stronger than their adversaries.

25 He (D)turned their heart to hate His people,
To (E)deal craftily with His servants.
26 He (F)sent Moses His servant,
And (G)Aaron, whom He had chosen.

Psalm 105:45

45 So that they might (A)keep His statutes
And observe His laws,
[a]Praise [b]the Lord!

Romans 12:9-21

Let (A)love be without hypocrisy. (B)Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be (C)devoted to one another in brotherly love; [a]give preference to one another (D)in honor; 11 not lagging behind in diligence, (E)fervent in spirit, (F)serving the Lord; 12 (G)rejoicing in hope, (H)persevering in tribulation, (I)devoted to prayer, 13 (J)contributing to the needs of the [b]saints, [c](K)practicing hospitality.

14 (L)Bless those who persecute [d]you; bless and do not curse. 15 (M)Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 (N)Be of the same mind toward one another; (O)do not be haughty in mind, but [e]associate with the lowly. (P)Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17 (Q)Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. [f](R)Respect what is right in the sight of all men. 18 If possible, (S)so far as it depends on you, (T)be at peace with all men. 19 (U)Never take your own revenge, beloved, but [g]leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “(V)Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 (W)But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Matthew 16:21-28

Jesus Foretells His Death

21 (A)From that time [a]Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and (B)suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. 22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “[b]God forbid it, Lord! This shall never [c]happen to You.” 23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, (C)Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on [d]God’s interests, but man’s.”

Discipleship Is Costly

24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and (D)take up his cross and follow Me. 25 For (E)whoever wishes to save his [e]life will lose it; but whoever loses his [f]life for My sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the (F)Son of Man (G)is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and (H)will then [g]repay every man according to his [h]deeds.

28 “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the (I)Son of Man (J)coming in His kingdom.”
