Psalm 116:1-2

Someone Saved from Death Praises God

116 I love the Lord, because he hears me;
    he listens to my prayers.
He listens to me
    every time I call to him.

Psalm 116:12-19

12 What can I offer the Lord
    for all his goodness to me?
13 I will bring a wine offering to the Lord,
    to thank him for saving me.
14 In the assembly of all his people
    I will give him what I have promised.

15 How painful it is to the Lord
    when one of his people dies!
16 I am your servant, Lord;
    I serve you just as my mother did.
You have saved me from death.
17 I will give you a sacrifice of thanksgiving
    and offer my prayer to you.
18-19 In the assembly of all your people,
    in the sanctuary of your Temple in Jerusalem,
    I will give you what I have promised.

Praise the Lord!

Genesis 24:1-9

A Wife for Isaac

24 Abraham was now very old, and the Lord had blessed him in everything he did. He said to his oldest servant, who was in charge of all that he had, “Place your hand between my thighs[a] and make a vow. I want you to make a vow in the name of the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not choose a wife for my son from the people here in Canaan. You must go back to the country where I was born and get a wife for my son Isaac from among my relatives.”

But the servant asked, “What if the young woman will not leave home to come with me to this land? Shall I send your son back to the land you came from?”

Abraham answered, “Make sure that you don't send my son back there! The Lord, the God of heaven, brought me from the home of my father and from the land of my relatives, and he solemnly promised me that he would give this land to my descendants. He will send his angel before you, so that you can get a wife there for my son. If the young woman is not willing to come with you, you will be free from this promise. But you must not under any circumstances take my son back there.” So the servant put his hand between the thighs of Abraham, his master, and made a vow to do what Abraham had asked.

Acts 7:35-43

35 (A)“Moses is the one who was rejected by the people of Israel. ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?’ they asked. He is the one whom God sent to rule the people and set them free with the help of the angel who appeared to him in the burning bush. 36 (B)He led the people out of Egypt, performing miracles and wonders in Egypt and at the Red Sea and for forty years in the desert. 37 (C)Moses is the one who said to the people of Israel, ‘God will send you a prophet, just as he sent me,[a] and he will be one of your own people.’ 38 (D)He is the one who was with the people of Israel assembled in the desert; he was there with our ancestors and with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and he received God's living messages to pass on to us.

39 “But our ancestors refused to obey him; they pushed him aside and wished that they could go back to Egypt. 40 (E)So they said to Aaron, ‘Make us some gods who will lead us. We do not know what has happened to that man Moses, who brought us out of Egypt.’ 41 (F)It was then that they made an idol in the shape of a bull, offered sacrifice to it, and had a feast in honor of what they themselves had made. 42 (G)So God turned away from them and gave them over to worship the stars of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:

‘People of Israel! It was not to me
    that you slaughtered and sacrificed animals
    for forty years in the desert.
43 It was the tent of the god Molech that you carried,
    and the image of Rephan, your star god;
    they were idols that you had made to worship.
And so I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’
