49 Give ear, ye islands, and hearken, ye people from afar. The Lord hath called me from the womb, from the bowels of my mother he hath been mindful of my name.

² And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword: in the shadow of his hand he hath protected me, and hath made me as a chosen arrow: in his quiver he hath hidden me.

³ And he said to me: Thou art my servant Israel, for in thee will I glory.

⁴ And I said: I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength without cause and in vain: therefore my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with my God.

⁵ And now saith the Lord, that formed me from the womb to be his servant, that I may bring back Jacob unto him, and Israel will not be gathered together: and I am glorified in the eyes of the Lord, and my God is made my strength.

⁶ And he said: It is a small thing that thou shouldst be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to convert the dregs of Israel. Behold, I have given thee to be the light of the Gentiles, that thou mayst be my salvation even to the farthest part of the earth.

⁷ Thus saith the Lord the redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, to the soul that is despised, to the nation that is abhorred, to the servant of rulers: Kings shall see, and princes shall rise up, and adore for the Lord's sake, because he is faithful, and for the Holy One of Israel, who hath chosen thee.

40 Unto the end, a psalm for David himself.

² Blessed is he that understandeth concerning the needy and the poor: the Lord will deliver him in the evil day.

³ The Lord preserve him and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth: and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies.

⁴ The Lord help him on his bed of sorrow: thou hast turned all his couch in his sickness.

⁵ I said: O Lord, be thou merciful to me: heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee.

⁶ My enemies have spoken evils against me: when shall he die and his name perish?

⁷ And if he came in to see me, he spoke vain things: his heart gathered together iniquity to itself. He went out and spoke to the same purpose.

⁸ All my enemies whispered together against me: they devised evils to me.

⁹ They determined against me an unjust word: shall he that sleepeth rise again no more?

¹⁰ For even the man of peace, in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, hath greatly supplanted me.

¹¹ But thou, O Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up again: and I will requite them.

² To the church of God that is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that invoke the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, in every place of theirs and ours.

³ Grace to you, and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

⁴ I give thanks to my God always for you, for the grace of God that is given you in Christ Jesus,

⁵ That in all things you are made rich in him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;

⁶ As the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you,

⁷ So that nothing is wanting to you in any grace, waiting for the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

⁸ Who also will confirm you unto the end without crime, in the day of the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

⁹ God is faithful: by whom you are called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

²⁹ The next day, John saw Jesus coming to him, and he saith: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who taketh away the sin of the world.

³⁰ This is he, of whom I said: After me there cometh a man, who is preferred before me: because he was before me.

³¹ And I knew him not, but that he may be made manifest in Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

³² And John gave testimony, saying: I saw the Spirit coming down, as a dove from heaven, and he remained upon him.

³³ And I knew him not; but he who sent me to baptize with water, said to me: He upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining upon him, he it is that baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

³⁴ And I saw, and I gave testimony, that this is the Son of God.

³⁵ The next day again John stood, and two of his disciples.

³⁶ And beholding Jesus walking, he saith: Behold the Lamb of God.

³⁷ And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

³⁸ And Jesus turning, and seeing them following him, saith to them: What seek you? Who said to him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

³⁹ He saith to them: Come and see. They came, and saw where he abode, and they stayed with him that day: now it was about the tenth hour.

⁴⁰ And Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard of John, and followed him.

⁴¹ He findeth first his brother Simon, and saith to him: We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

⁴² And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looking upon him, said: Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is interpreted Peter.
