Psalm 124

Psalm 124

The Lord Is on Our Side

Heading
A song of the ascents. By David.

The Lord Is on Our Side

Unless it was the Lord who was for us—
let Israel say—
unless it was the Lord who was for us
when people[a] rose against us,
they would have swallowed us alive
when their anger burned against us.
Then the waters would have submerged us.
The torrent would have swept our lives away.
Then the wild waters would have swept us away.
Blessed be the Lord,
who has not let us be prey for their teeth.
We have escaped with our lives
like a bird out of the fowlers’ snare.
The snare has been broken, and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

Isaiah 54:1-10

Jerusalem Will Have Many Children

54

You barren woman who never gave birth, shout for joy.
Burst forth with shouts of joy!
Cry aloud, you who have never been in labor,
because the deserted woman has more children
than the woman who is married, says the Lord.
Make more room for your tent.
Tell them to stretch out the curtains of your dwelling.
Do not hold back!
Make your tent ropes longer.
Make your tent stakes stronger,
because you will spread out to the right and to the left.
Your offspring will take possession of nations,
and they will repopulate devastated cities.
Do not be afraid,
because you will not be put to shame.
Do not be worried,
because you will not be embarrassed.
You will forget the shame of your youth,
and you will never remember the disgrace of your widowhood,
because your Maker is your husband.
The Lord of Armies is his name.
Your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.
He is called the God of all the earth.
Though you are like an abandoned wife with a wounded spirit,
though you are like the wife from a man’s youth who has been rejected,
the Lord is calling you back, says your God.
For a brief moment I abandoned you,
but with great compassion I am gathering you.
In a flood of anger I hid my face from you for a moment,
but in everlasting mercy I will have compassion on you,
says your Redeemer, the Lord.
To me this is like the time of the waters of Noah.
As I swore that the waters of Noah will never again cover the earth,
so I am swearing that I will not be angry at you,
and I will not rebuke you.
10 For even if the mountains are removed,
and the hills are overthrown,
my mercy will not be removed from you,
and my covenant of peace will not be overthrown,
says the Lord, who is showing you mercy.

Matthew 24:23-35

23 “At that time if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Christ,’ or ‘There he is,’ do not believe it. 24 For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will perform great signs and wonders so as to deceive even the elect, if it were possible.

25 “See, I have told you in advance. 26 So if they tell you, ‘Look! There he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out there, or ‘Look! Here he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 Just as the lightning flashes from the east and shines as far as the west, so it will be when the Son of Man comes. 28 Wherever the carcass may be, there the vultures will gather.

29 “Immediately after the misery of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky. And at that time all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. 31 He will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

32 “Learn this lesson from the fig tree. When its branch has become tender and produces leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 In the same way, when you see all these things, know that he is near, right at the doors. 34 Amen I tell you: This generation[a] will certainly not pass away until all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
