Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 76
God, the Powerful Judge
For the choir director: with stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph.(A) A song.
1 God is known in Judah;
His name is great in Israel.(B)
2 His tent is in Salem,[a]
His dwelling place in Zion.(C)
3 There He shatters the bow’s flaming arrows,
the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war.(D)
4 You are resplendent and majestic
coming down from the mountains of prey.(E)
5 The brave-hearted have been plundered;
they have slipped into their final sleep.
None of the warriors was able to lift a hand.(F)
6 At Your rebuke, God of Jacob,
both chariot and horse lay still.(G)
7 And You—You are to be feared.[b]
When You are angry,
who can stand before You?(H)
8 From heaven You pronounced judgment.
The earth feared and grew quiet(I)
9 when God rose up to judge
and to save all the lowly of the earth.(J)
10 Even human wrath will praise You;
You will clothe Yourself
with their remaining wrath.[c](K)
14 You will see, you will rejoice,
and you[a] will flourish like grass;(A)
then the Lord’s power will be revealed to His servants,
but He will show His wrath against His enemies.
15 Look, the Lord will come with fire(B)—
His chariots are like the whirlwind(C)—
to execute His anger with fury
and His rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For the Lord will execute judgment
on all flesh(D) with His fiery sword,
and many will be slain by the Lord.
17 “Those who dedicate and purify themselves to enter the groves(E) following their leader,[b] eating meat from pigs, vermin, and rats, will perish together.”
This is the Lord’s declaration.
18 “Knowing[c] their works and their thoughts, I have come to gather all nations and languages;(F) they will come and see My glory. 19 I will establish a sign among them, and I will send survivors from them to the nations—to Tarshish, Put,[d] Lud (who are archers), Tubal, Javan,(G) and the islands far away—who have not heard of My fame or seen My glory. And they will proclaim My glory among the nations.(H) 20 They will bring all your brothers from all the nations as a gift to the Lord on horses and chariots, in litters, and on mules and camels, to My holy mountain Jerusalem,”(I) says the Lord, “just as the Israelites bring an offering in a clean vessel to the house of the Lord. 21 I will also take some of them as priests and Levites,”(J) says the Lord.
22 “For just as the new heavens and the new earth,(K)
which I will make,
will endure before Me”—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
“so your offspring and your name will endure.
23 All mankind will come to worship Me
from one New Moon to another
and from one Sabbath to another,”
says the Lord.
24 “As they leave, they will see the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against Me;(L) for their worm(M) will never die, their fire will never go out,(N) and they will be a horror to all mankind.”(O)
Jesus’ Lamentation over Jerusalem
37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem!(A) She who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks[a] under her wings, yet you were not willing!(B) 38 See, your house is left to you desolate.(C) 39 For I tell you, you will never see Me again until you say, ‘He who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One’!”(D)[b]
Destruction of the Temple Predicted
24 As Jesus left and was going out of the temple complex,(E) His disciples(F) came up and called His attention to the temple buildings. 2 Then He replied to them, “Don’t you see all these things? I assure you: Not one stone will be left here on another that will not be thrown down!”
Signs of the End of the Age
3 While He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached Him privately and said, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what is the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?”(G)
4 Then Jesus replied to them: “Watch out that no one deceives(H) you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will deceive many.(I) 6 You are going to hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, because these things must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines[c](J) and earthquakes in various places.(K) 8 All these events are the beginning of birth pains.(L)
Persecutions Predicted
9 “Then they will hand you over for persecution,[d] and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of My name.(M) 10 Then many will take offense, betray one another and hate one another. 11 Many false prophets(N) will rise up and deceive many. 12 Because lawlessness(O) will multiply, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be delivered.[e] 14 This good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed in all the world[f] as a testimony to all nations.(P) And then the end will come.(Q)
