Lament over Judah

18 My joy has flown away;
grief has settled on me.
My heart is sick.(A)
19 Listen—the cry of my dear[a] people
from a far away land,
“Is the Lord no longer in Zion,(B)
her King not within her?”
Why have they provoked me to anger
with their carved images,
with their worthless foreign idols?(C)
20 Harvest has passed, summer has ended,
but we have not been saved.
21 I am broken by the brokenness
of my dear[b] people.(D)
I mourn; horror has taken hold of me.
22 Is there no balm in Gilead?(E)
Is there no physician there?
So why has the healing of my dear[c] people
not come about?

[d]If my head were a spring of water,
my eyes a fountain of tears,
I would weep day and night(F)
over the slain of my dear[e] people.

Psalm 79:1-9

Psalm 79

Faith amid Confusion

A psalm of Asaph.(A)

God, the nations have invaded Your inheritance,
desecrated Your holy temple,
and turned Jerusalem into ruins.(B)
They gave the corpses of Your servants
to the birds of the sky for food,
the flesh of Your godly ones
to the beasts of the earth.(C)
They poured out their blood
like water all around Jerusalem,
and there was no one to bury them.(D)
We have become an object of reproach
to our neighbors,
a source of mockery and ridicule
to those around us.(E)

How long, Yahweh? Will You be angry forever?
Will Your jealousy keep burning like fire?(F)
Pour out Your wrath on the nations
that don’t acknowledge You,
on the kingdoms that don’t call on Your name,(G)
for they have devoured Jacob
and devastated his homeland.(H)
Do not hold past sins[a] against us;
let Your compassion come to us quickly,
for we have become weak.(I)

God of our salvation, help us(J)
for the glory of Your name.
Deliver us and atone for[b] our sins,
because of Your name.(K)

1 Timothy 2:1-7

Instructions on Prayer

First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority,(A) so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness(B) and dignity.(C) This is good, and it pleases God our Savior,(D) who wants everyone(E) to be saved(F) and to come to the knowledge of the truth.(G)

For there is one God(H)
and one mediator(I) between God and humanity,
Christ Jesus, Himself human,(J)
who gave Himself—a ransom for all,(K)
a testimony at the proper time.

For this I was appointed a herald, an apostle(L) (I am telling the truth;[a] I am not lying), and a teacher of the Gentiles(M) in faith and truth.

Luke 16:1-13

The Parable of the Dishonest Manager

16 He also said to the disciples: “There was a rich(A) man who received an accusation that his manager(B) was squandering(C) his possessions. So he called the manager in and asked, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management,(D) because you can no longer be my manager.’

“Then the manager said to himself, ‘What should I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I’m not strong enough to dig; I’m ashamed to beg. I know what I’ll do so that when I’m removed from management, people will welcome me into their homes.’

“So he summoned each one of his master’s debtors. ‘How much do you owe my master?’ he asked the first one.

“‘A hundred measures of olive oil,’ he said.

“‘Take your invoice,’ he told him, ‘sit down quickly, and write 50.’

“Next he asked another, ‘How much do you owe?’

“‘A hundred measures of wheat,’ he said.

“‘Take your invoice,’ he told him, ‘and write 80.’

“The master praised the unrighteous manager(E) because he had acted astutely. For the sons of this age(F) are more astute than the sons of light(G) in dealing with their own people.[a] And I tell you, make friends(H) for yourselves by means of the unrighteous money(I) so that when it fails,[b] they may welcome you into eternal dwellings. 10 Whoever is faithful(J) in very little(K) is also faithful in much, and whoever is unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much. 11 So if you have not been faithful with the unrighteous money, who will trust you with what is genuine? 12 And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to someone else, who will give you what is your own? 13 No(L) household slave can be the slave of two masters, since either he will hate(M) one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t be slaves to both God and money.”
