Psalm 2

Psalm 2[a]

A Psalm for a Royal Coronation

Why do the nations protest
    and the peoples conspire in vain?(A)
Kings on earth rise up
    and princes plot together
    against the Lord and against his anointed one:[b](B)
“Let us break their shackles
    and cast off their chains from us!”(C)
The one enthroned in heaven laughs;
    the Lord derides them,(D)
Then he speaks to them in his anger,
    in his wrath he terrifies them:
“I myself have installed my king
    on Zion, my holy mountain.”
I will proclaim the decree of the Lord,
    he said to me, “You are my son;
    today I have begotten you.(E)
Ask it of me,
    and I will give you the nations as your inheritance,
    and, as your possession, the ends of the earth.
With an iron rod you will shepherd them,
    like a potter’s vessel you will shatter them.”(F)
10 And now, kings, give heed;
    take warning, judges on earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear;
    exult with trembling,
Accept correction
    lest he become angry and you perish along the way
    when his anger suddenly blazes up.(G)
Blessed are all who take refuge in him!

Jeremiah 20

Chapter 20

Now the priest Pashhur,(A) son of Immer, chief officer in the house of the Lord,[a] heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. So he struck the prophet and put him in the stocks at the upper Gate of Benjamin in the house of the Lord.(B) The next morning, after Pashhur had released Jeremiah from the stocks, the prophet said to him:(C) “Instead of Pashhur, the Lord names you ‘Terror on every side.’[b] For thus says the Lord: Indeed, I will hand you over to terror, you and all your friends. Your own eyes shall see them fall by the sword of their enemies. All Judah I will hand over to the power of the king of Babylon,[c] who shall take them captive to Babylon or strike them down with the sword. All the wealth of this city, all its resources and its valuables, all the treasures of the kings of Judah, I will hand over to their enemies, who will plunder it and carry it away to Babylon.(D) You, Pashhur, and all the members of your household shall go into exile. To Babylon you shall go; there you shall die and be buried, you and all your friends, because you have prophesied lies to them.”(E)

Jeremiah’s Interior Crisis

You seduced me,[d] Lord, and I let myself be seduced;
    you were too strong for me, and you prevailed.
All day long I am an object of laughter;
    everyone mocks me.
Whenever I speak, I must cry out,
    violence and outrage I proclaim;
The word of the Lord has brought me
    reproach and derision all day long.
I say I will not mention him,
    I will no longer speak in his name.
But then it is as if fire is burning in my heart,
    imprisoned in my bones;
I grow weary holding back,
    I cannot!(F)
10 Yes, I hear the whisperings of many:
    “Terror on every side!
    Denounce! let us denounce him!”
All those who were my friends
    are on the watch for any misstep of mine.
“Perhaps he can be tricked; then we will prevail,
    and take our revenge on him.”(G)
11 But the Lord is with me, like a mighty champion:
    my persecutors will stumble, they will not prevail.
In their failure they will be put to utter shame,
    to lasting, unforgettable confusion.(H)
12 Lord of hosts, you test the just,
    you see mind and heart,
Let me see the vengeance you take on them,
    for to you I have entrusted my cause.(I)
13 Sing to the Lord,
    praise the Lord,
For he has rescued the life of the poor
    from the power of the evildoers!(J)

14 Cursed be the day[e]
    on which I was born!
May the day my mother gave me birth
    never be blessed!(K)
15 Cursed be the one who brought the news
    to my father,
“A child, a son, has been born to you!”
    filling him with great joy.
16 Let that man be like the cities
    which the Lord relentlessly overthrew;
Let him hear war cries in the morning,
    battle alarms at noonday,(L)
17     because he did not kill me in the womb!
Then my mother would have been my grave,
    her womb confining me forever.(M)
18 Why did I come forth from the womb,
    to see sorrow and pain,
    to end my days in shame?(N)

Luke 18:18-30

The Rich Official. 18 (A)An official asked him this question, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(B) 19 Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 20 You know the commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother.’”(C) 21 And he replied, “All of these I have observed from my youth.” 22 [a](D)When Jesus heard this he said to him, “There is still one thing left for you: sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 23 But when he heard this he became quite sad, for he was very rich.

On Riches and Renunciation. 24 Jesus looked at him [now sad] and said, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 Those who heard this said, “Then who can be saved?” 27 And he said, “What is impossible for human beings is possible for God.”(E) 28 Then Peter said, “We have given up our possessions and followed you.” 29 (F)He said to them, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 who will not receive [back] an overabundant return in this present age and eternal life in the age to come.”
