Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
An Object Lesson from the Making of Pottery
18 The Lord said to Jeremiah:[a] 2 “Go down at once[b] to the potter’s house. I will speak to you further there.”[c] 3 So I went down to the potter’s house and found him working[d] at his wheel.[e] 4 Now and then[f] there would be something wrong[g] with the pot he was molding from the clay[h] with his hands. So he would rework[i] the clay into another kind of pot as he saw fit.[j]
5 Then the Lord’s message came to me, 6 “I, the Lord, say:[k] ‘O nation of Israel, can I not deal with you as this potter deals with the clay?[l] In my hands, you, O nation of Israel, are just like the clay in this potter’s hand.’ 7 There are times, Jeremiah,[m] when I threaten to uproot, tear down, and destroy a nation or kingdom.[n] 8 But if that nation I threatened stops doing wrong,[o] I will cancel the destruction[p] I intended to do to it. 9 And there are times when I promise to build up and establish[q] a nation or kingdom. 10 But if that nation does what displeases me and does not obey me, then I will cancel the good I promised to do to it. 11 So now, tell the people of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem this: The Lord says, ‘I am preparing to bring disaster on you! I am making plans to punish you.[r] So, every one of you, stop the evil things you have been doing.[s] Correct the way you have been living and do what is right.’[t]
Psalm 139[a]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
139 O Lord, you examine me[b] and know me.
2 You know when I sit down and when I get up;
even from far away you understand my motives.
3 You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest;[c]
you are aware of everything I do.[d]
4 Certainly[e] my tongue does not frame a word
without you, O Lord, being thoroughly aware of it.[f]
5 You squeeze me in from behind and in front;
you place your hand on me.
6 Your knowledge is beyond my comprehension;
it is so far beyond me, I am unable to fathom it.[g]
13 Certainly[a] you made my mind and heart;[b]
you wove me together[c] in my mother’s womb.
14 I will give you thanks because your deeds are awesome and amazing.[d]
You knew me thoroughly;[e]
15 my bones were not hidden from you,
when[f] I was made in secret
and sewed together in the depths of the earth.[g]
16 Your eyes saw me when I was inside the womb.[h]
All the days ordained for me
were recorded in your scroll
before one of them came into existence.[i]
17 How difficult it is for me to fathom your thoughts about me, O God![j]
How vast is their sum total.[k]
18 If I tried to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand.
Even if I finished counting them,
I would still have to contend with you.[l]
Salutation
1 From Paul,[a] a prisoner of Christ Jesus,[b] and Timothy our[c] brother, to Philemon, our dear friend[d] and colaborer, 2 to Apphia[e] our sister,[f] to Archippus our[g] fellow soldier, and to the church that meets in your house. 3 Grace and peace to you[h] from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
Thanks for Philemon’s Love and Faith
4 I always thank my God[i] as I remember you in my prayers,[j] 5 because I hear[k] of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love[l] for all the saints.[m] 6 I pray[n] that the faith you share with us may deepen your understanding of every blessing[o] that belongs to you[p] in Christ.[q] 7 I[r] have had great joy and encouragement because[s] of your love, for the hearts[t] of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.
Paul’s Request for Onesimus
8 So, although I have quite a lot of confidence in Christ and could command you to do what is proper, 9 I would rather appeal[u] to you on the basis of love—I, Paul, an old man[v] and even now a prisoner for the sake of Christ Jesus[w]— 10 I am appealing[x] to you concerning my child, whose spiritual father I have become[y] during my imprisonment,[z] that is, Onesimus, 11 who was formerly useless to you, but is now useful to you[aa] and me. 12 I have sent[ab] him (who is my very heart)[ac] back to you. 13 I wanted to keep him with me so that he could serve me in your place[ad] during[ae] my imprisonment for the sake of the gospel.[af] 14 However,[ag] without your consent I did not want to do anything, so that your good deed would not be out of compulsion, but from your own willingness. 15 For perhaps it was for this reason that he was separated from you for a little while, so that you would have him back eternally,[ah] 16 no longer as a slave,[ai] but more than a slave, as a dear brother. He is especially so to me, and even more so to you now, both humanly speaking[aj] and in the Lord. 17 Therefore if you regard me as a partner, accept him as you would me. 18 Now if he has defrauded you of anything or owes you anything, charge what he owes[ak] to me. 19 I, Paul, have written[al] this letter[am] with my own hand:[an] I will repay it. I could also mention that you owe[ao] me your very self. 20 Yes, brother, let me have some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ.[ap] 21 Since I was confident that you would obey, I wrote to you, because I knew that you would do even more than[aq] what I am asking you to do.
Counting the Cost
25 Now large crowds[a] were accompanying Jesus,[b] and turning to them he said, 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate[c] his own father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, and even his own life,[d] he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not carry his own cross[e] and follow[f] me cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t sit down[g] first and compute the cost[h] to see if he has enough money to complete it? 29 Otherwise,[i] when he has laid[j] a foundation and is not able to finish the tower,[k] all who see it[l] will begin to make fun of[m] him. 30 They will say,[n] ‘This man[o] began to build and was not able to finish!’[p] 31 Or what king, going out to confront another king in battle, will not sit down[q] first and determine whether he is able with 10,000 to oppose[r] the one coming against him with 20,000? 32 If he cannot succeed,[s] he will send a representative[t] while the other is still a long way off and ask for terms of peace.[u] 33 In the same way therefore not one of you can be my disciple if he does not renounce all his own possessions.[v]
