Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
5 1 Under the similitude of the vine, he describeth the state of the people. 8 Of their avarice. 11 Their drunkenness. 13 Of their captivity.
1 Now will [a]I sing to my [b]beloved a song of my beloved to his vineyard, (A)My beloved had a [c]vineyard in a very fruitful hill.
2 And he hedged it, and gathered out the stones of it, and he planted it with the best plants, [d]and he built a tower in the midst thereof, and made a winepress therein, then he looked that it should bring forth grapes: but it brought forth [e]wild grapes.
3 Now therefore, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, [f]between me and my vineyard.
4 What could I have done anymore to my vineyard that I have not done unto it? why have I looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it bringeth forth wild grapes?
5 And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I [g]will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up: I will break the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:
6 And I will lay it waste: it shall not be cut, nor dug, but briers and thorns shall grow up: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.
7 ¶ Surely the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant plant, and he looked for [h]judgment, but behold oppression: for righteousness, but behold [i]a crying.
80 1 A lamentable prayer to God to help the miseries of his Church, 8 Desiring him to consider their first estate, when his favor shined toward them, to the intent that he might finish that work which he had begun.
To him that excelleth on Shoshannim Eduth, A Psalm committed to Asaph.
1 Hear, [a]O thou shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like sheep: show thy brightness, thou that sittest between the [b]Cherubims.
2 Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength, and come to help us.
8 Thou hast brought a [a]vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it.
9 Thou madest room for it, and didst cause it to take root, and it filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the [b]goodly cedars.
11 She stretched out her branches unto the Sea, and her boughs unto the [c]river.
12 Why hast thou then broken down her hedges, so that all they, which pass by the way, have plucked her?
13 The wild [d]boar out of the wood hath destroyed it, and the wild beasts of the field have eaten it up.
14 Return, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: look down [e]from heaven and behold, and visit this vine,
15 And the vineyard, that thy right hand hath planted, and the young vine, which thou madest [f]strong for thyself.
16 It is burnt with fire, and cut down: and they perish at the [g]rebuke of thy countenance.
17 Let thine hand be upon the [h]man of thy right hand, and upon the son of man, whom thou madest strong for thine own self.
18 So will not we go back from thee, [i]revive thou us, and we shall call upon thy Name.
19 Turn us again, O Lord God of hosts: cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.
29 [a]By faith they (A)passed through the red sea as by dry land, which when the Egyptians had assayed to do, they were swallowed up.
30 [b]By faith the (B)walls of Jericho fell down after they were compassed about seven days.
31 [c]By faith the [d]harlot (C)Rahab perished not with them which obeyed not, when (D)she had received the spies [e]peaceably.
32 [f]And what shall I more say? for the time would be too short for me to tell of (E)Gideon, of (F)Barak, and of (G)Samson, and of (H)Jephthah, also of David, and Samuel, and of the Prophets:
33 Which through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained the [g]promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, of weak were made strong, waxed valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
35 The [h]women received their dead raised to life: others also were [i]racked, and would not be delivered, that they might receive a better resurrection.
36 And others have been tried by mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover by bonds, and imprisonment.
37 They were stoned, they were hewn asunder, they were tempted, they were slain with the sword, they wandered up and down in [j]sheep’s skins, and in goats’ skins, being destitute, afflicted, and tormented:
38 Whom the world was not worthy of: they wandered in wildernesses and mountains, and dens, and caves of the earth.
39 [k]And these all through faith obtained good report, and received [l]not the promise,
40 God providing a better thing for us, that they [m]without us should not be made perfect.
12 1 He doth not only by the examples of the Fathers before recited, exhort them to patience and constancy, 3 but also by the example of Christ. 11 That the chastenings of God cannot be rightly judged by the outward sense of our flesh.
1 Wherefore, (I)[n]let us also, seeing that we are compassed with so great a cloud of witnesses, cast away everything that presseth down, and the sin that [o]hangeth so fast on: let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 [p][q]Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who for the [r]joy that was set before him, endured the cross, and despised the shame, and is set at the right hand of the throne of God.
49 ¶ [a]I am come to put fire on the earth, and what is my desire, if it be already kindled?
50 Notwithstanding I must be baptized with a baptism, and how am I grieved till it be ended?
51 (A)Think ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, nay, but rather debate.
52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father: the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother: the mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
54 ¶ (B)[b]Then said he to the people, When ye see a cloud [c]rise out of the West, straightway ye say, A shower cometh: and so it is.
55 And when ye see the South wind blow, ye say, that it will be hot: and it cometh to pass.
56 Hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the earth, and of the sky: but why discern ye not this time?
