Psalm 60

Prayer in Difficult Times

For the choir director: according to “The Lily of Testimony.”[a] A Davidic Miktam for teaching. When he fought with Aram-naharaim and Aram-zobah, and Joab returned and struck Edom in the Valley of Salt, killing 12,000.(A)

God, You have rejected us;
You have broken out[b] against us;
You have been angry. Restore us![c](B)
You have shaken the land and split it open.
Heal its fissures, for it shudders.(C)
You have made Your people suffer hardship;
You have given us wine to drink
that made us stagger.(D)
You have given a signal flag to those who fear You,
so that they can flee before the archers.[d](E)Selah
Save with Your right hand, and answer me,
so that those You love may be rescued.(F)

God has spoken in His sanctuary:[e]
“I will triumph! I will divide up Shechem.(G)
I will apportion the Valley of Succoth.(H)
Gilead is Mine, Manasseh is Mine,
and Ephraim is My helmet;(I)
Judah is My scepter.(J)
Moab is My washbasin.(K)
I throw My sandal on Edom;(L)
I shout in triumph over Philistia.”(M)

Who will bring me to the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?(N)
10 God, haven’t You rejected us?
God, You do not march out with our armies.(O)
11 Give us aid against the foe,
for human help is worthless.(P)
12 With God we will perform valiantly;(Q)
He will trample our foes.(R)

Hosea 11:12-12:14

12 [a] Ephraim surrounds me with lies,(A)
the house of Israel, with deceit.
Judah still wanders with God
and is faithful to the holy ones.[b][c]

God’s Case against Jacob’s Heirs

12 Ephraim chases[d] the wind(B)
and pursues the east wind.(C)
He continually multiplies lies and violence.
He makes a covenant with Assyria,(D)
and olive oil is carried to Egypt.(E)

The Lord also has a dispute with Judah.
He is about to punish Jacob according to his ways;(F)
He will repay him based on his actions.
In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel,(G)
and as an adult he wrestled with God.(H)
Jacob struggled with the Angel and prevailed;
he wept and sought His favor.(I)
He found him[e] at Bethel,(J)
and there He spoke with him.[f](K)
Yahweh is the God of Hosts;
Yahweh is His name.(L)
But you must return to your God.(M)
Maintain love and justice,(N)
and always put your hope in God.(O)

A merchant loves to extort(P)
with dishonest scales in his hands.(Q)
But Ephraim says:
“How rich I have become;(R)
I made it all myself.
In all my earnings,
no one can find any crime in me(S)
that I can be punished for!”[g]

Judgment on Apostate Israel

I have been Yahweh your God
ever since[h] the land of Egypt.(T)
I will make you live in tents again,(U)
as in the festival days.
10 I spoke through the prophets(V)
and granted many visions;
I gave parables through the prophets.(W)
11 Since Gilead is full of evil,(X)
they will certainly come to nothing.
They sacrifice bulls in Gilgal;(Y)
even their altars will be like heaps of rocks(Z)
on the furrows of a field.

Further Indictment of Jacob’s Heirs

12 Jacob fled to the land of Aram.(AA)
Israel worked to earn a wife;(AB)
he tended flocks for a wife.(AC)
13 The Lord brought Israel from Egypt by a prophet,(AD)
and Israel was tended by a prophet.

14 Ephraim has provoked bitter anger,(AE)
so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt on him(AF)
and repay him for his contempt.(AG)

Colossians 3:18-4:1

Christ in Your Home

18 Wives, be submissive to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.(A)
19 Husbands,(B) love your wives(C) and don’t be bitter(D) toward them.
20 Children,(E) obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
21 Fathers,(F) do not exasperate(G) your children, so they won’t become discouraged.
22 Slaves, obey your human(H) masters in everything. Don’t work only while being watched, in order to please men, but work wholeheartedly, fearing the Lord.(I)
23 Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically,[a] as something done for the Lord and not for men,(J) 24 knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ. 25 For the wrongdoer(K) will be paid back for whatever wrong he has done, and there is no favoritism.
Masters,(L) supply your slaves with what is right and fair, since you know that you too have a Master in heaven.
