Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
1 ¶ There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God and departed from evil.
2 ¶ Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.
2 And the LORD said unto Satan, Where dost thou come from? And Satan answered the LORD and said, From going to and fro in the earth and from walking up and down in it.
3 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my slave Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that fears God and has departed from evil and that he still retains his perfection, although thou didst incite me against him to destroy him without cause.
4 And Satan answered the LORD and said, Skin for skin, all that a man has he will give for his life.
5 But put forth thy hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and thou shalt see if he does not blaspheme thee to thy face.
6 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thy hand, but preserve his life.
7 ¶ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto the crown of his head.
8 And he took a potsherd to scratch himself with, and he was sitting among the ashes.
9 Then his wife said unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? Blaspheme God and die.
10 But he said unto her, Thou hast spoken as any of the foolish women speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God and shall we not receive evil? In all this Job did not sin with his lips.
A Psalm of David.
1 ¶ Judge me, O LORD, for I have walked in my integrity; I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide.
2 Examine me, O LORD and prove me; melt my kidneys and my heart.
3 For thy mercy is before my eyes, and I walk in thy truth.
4 I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with hypocrites.
5 I have hated the congregation of evil doers and will not sit with the wicked.
6 ¶ I will wash my hands in innocency, so I will walk near unto thine altar, O LORD:
7 That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving and tell of all thy wondrous works.
8 LORD, I have loved the habitation of thy house and the place of the tabernacle of thy glory.
9 Gather not my soul with the sinners, nor my life with those who have blood on their hands:
10 In whose hands are wicked devices, and their right hand is full of bribes.
11 But as for me, I will walk in my integrity; ransom me and be merciful unto me.
12 I have walked uprightly; in the congregations I will bless the LORD.
1 ¶ God, having spoken many times and in many ways in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 has in these last times spoken unto us by his Son, whom he has appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the ages;
3 who being the brightness of his glory and the express image of his substance and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
4 ¶ being made so much better than the angels, as he has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
5 ¶ For unto the angels he has not subjected the world to come, of which we speak.
6 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou dost visit him?
7 Thou didst make him a little lower than the angels; thou didst crown him with glory and honour and didst set him over the works of thy hands.
8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not see yet that all things are put under him.
9 But we see this same Jesus, crowned with glory and honour, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
10 ¶ For it was expedient that he, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, preparing to bring forth many sons in his glory, should perfect the author of their saving health through sufferings.
11 For both he that sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all of one, for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
12 saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren; in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee.
2 And the Pharisees came to him and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.
3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?
4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorce and to put her away.
5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this commandment.
6 But at the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall join to his wife;
8 and they that were two shall be made one flesh, so then they are no longer two, but one flesh.
9 Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.
10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.
11 And he said unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another commits adultery against her.
12 And if the woman shall put away her husband and be married to another, she commits adultery.
13 ¶ And they brought young children to him that he should touch them, and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.
14 And Jesus seeing it, became angry and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me and hinder them not, for of such is the kingdom of God.
15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.
16 And taking them up in his arms and putting his hands upon them, he blessed them.
