Psalm 45:1-2

Psalm 45[a]

Nuptial Ode for the Messianic King

For the director.[b] According to “Lilies.” A maskil of the sons of Korah. A love song.

[c]My heart[d] is moved by a noble theme
    as I sing my poem to the king;
    my tongue is like the pen of a skillful scribe.

Psalm 45:6-9

Your arrows are sharp;
    nations will lie beneath your feet;
    the enemies of the king will lose heart.[a]
Your throne, O God,[b] will last forever and ever;
    the scepter of your kingdom will be a scepter of justice.
You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
    therefore God, your God, has established you above your fellow kings
    by anointing you with the oil of gladness.
[c]All your robes are fragrant
    with myrrh and aloes and cassia;
from palaces of ivory
    stringed instruments bring joy to your heart.

Song of Songs 2:1-7

Chapter 2

Bride:

I am a rose of Sharon,[a]
    a lily of the valley.

Bridegroom:

As a lily growing among thorns,
    so is my beloved among maidens.[b]

Bride:

Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest,
    so is my beloved among young men.
To sit in his shadow is my delight,
    and his fruit is sweet to my taste.
He escorts me into his banquet hall
    and his banner[c] over me is love.
Strengthen me with raisins,
    restore me with apples,[d]
    for I am sick with love.
His left arm is under my head
    and his right arm embraces me.

Bridegroom:

I charge you, daughters of Jerusalem,[e]
    by the gazelles and the wild does:
Do not stir up or awaken love
    before its time has come.

James 1:9-16

Rich and Poor.[a] The brother who is in modest circumstances should take pride in being raised up. 10 Likewise, the one who is rich should glory in being brought low, for he will disappear like a flower of the field. 11 Once the sun comes up with its scorching rays and withers the grass, its flower droops and its beauty vanishes. So too the rich man will fade away in the midst of his affairs.

12 Trials and Temptations. Blessed is the man who perseveres when he is tempted, for when he has been proven, he will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.[b]

13 [c]While experiencing temptation, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 Rather, temptation occurs when someone is attracted and seduced by his own desire. 15 Then the desire conceives and gives birth to sin, and that sin, when it reaches full growth, gives birth to death.

16 Light and Life.[d] Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.
