Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Zion, the City of Our God
A Song. A Psalm of (A)the Sons of Korah.
48 (B)Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised
in (C)the city of our God!
His (D)holy mountain, 2 (E)beautiful in elevation,
is (F)the joy of all the earth,
Mount Zion, in the far north,
(G)the city of the great King.
3 Within her citadels God
has made himself known as a fortress.
4 For behold, (H)the kings assembled;
they came on together.
5 As soon as they saw it, they were astounded;
they were in panic; they took to flight.
6 (I)Trembling took hold of them there,
anguish (J)as of a woman in labor.
7 By (K)the east wind you (L)shattered
the ships of (M)Tarshish.
8 As we have heard, so have we seen
in the city of the Lord of hosts,
in (N)the city of our God,
which God will (O)establish forever. Selah
David Anointed King of Judah
2 After this David (A)inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” David said, “To which shall I go up?” And he said, “To (B)Hebron.” 2 So David went up there, and (C)his two wives also, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel. 3 And David brought up (D)his men who were with him, everyone with his household, and they lived in the towns of Hebron. 4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David (E)king over the house of Judah.
When they told David, (F)“It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,” 5 David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, (G)“May you be blessed by the Lord, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord and buried him. 6 Now may the Lord show steadfast love and faithfulness to you. And I will do good to you because you have done this thing. 7 Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant, for Saul your lord is dead, and (H)the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”
Ish-bosheth Made King of Israel
8 But (I)Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul's army, took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to (J)Mahanaim, 9 and he made him king over Gilead and the Ashurites and Jezreel and Ephraim and Benjamin and all Israel. 10 Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. 11 (K)And the time that David was king in Hebron over (L)the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
8 Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! Without us you have become kings! And would that you did reign, so that we might share the rule with you! 9 For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, (A)like men sentenced to death, because we (B)have become a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men. 10 (C)We are fools for Christ's sake, but (D)you are wise in Christ. (E)We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. 11 To the present hour (F)we hunger and thirst, we are poorly dressed and (G)buffeted and (H)homeless, 12 and we (I)labor, working with our own hands. (J)When reviled, we bless; (K)when persecuted, we endure; 13 when slandered, we entreat. (L)We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, (M)the refuse of all things.
