Psalm 53

Folly and Wickedness of Men.

For the choir director; according to [a]Mahalath. A [b]Maskil of David.

53 (A)The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God,”
They are corrupt, and have committed abominable injustice;
(B)There is no one who does good.
God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men
To see if there is (C)anyone who [c]understands,
Who (D)seeks after God.
(E)Every one of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt;
There is no one who does good, not even one.

Have the workers of wickedness (F)no knowledge,
Who eat up My people as though they ate bread
And have not called upon God?
There they were in great [d]fear (G)where no [e]fear had been;
For God (H)scattered the bones of [f]him who encamped against you;
You (I)put them to shame, because (J)God had rejected them.
Oh, that (K)the salvation of Israel [g]would come out of Zion!
When God [h]restores His captive people,
[i]Let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

1 Samuel 13:23-14

23 And (A)the garrison of the Philistines went out to (B)the pass of Michmash.

Jonathan’s Victory

14 Now the day came that Jonathan, the son of Saul, said to the young man who was carrying his armor, “Come and let us cross over to the Philistines’ garrison that is on the other side.” But he did not tell his father. Saul was staying in the outskirts of (C)Gibeah under the pomegranate tree which is in (D)Migron. And the people who were with him were (E)about six hundred men, and Ahijah, the (F)son of Ahitub, (G)Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the priest of the Lord at (H)Shiloh, (I)was [a]wearing an ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan had gone. (J)Between the passes by which Jonathan sought to cross over to the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp crag on the one side and a sharp crag on the other side, and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh. The one crag rose on the north opposite Michmash, and the other on the south opposite Geba.

Then Jonathan said to the young man who was carrying his armor, “Come and let us cross over to the garrison of (K)these uncircumcised; perhaps the Lord will work for us, for (L)the Lord is not restrained to save by many or by few.” His armor bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart; turn yourself, and here I am with you according to your [b]desire.” Then Jonathan said, “(M)Behold, we will cross over to the men and reveal ourselves to them. If they [c]say to us, ‘Wait until we come to you’; then we will stand in our place and not go up to them. 10 But if they [d]say, ‘Come up to us,’ then we will go up, for the Lord has given them into our hands; and (N)this shall be the sign to us.” 11 When both of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines, the Philistines said, “Behold, (O)Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden themselves.” 12 So the men of the garrison [e]hailed Jonathan and his armor bearer and said, “Come up to us and (P)we will tell you something.” And Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come up after me, for (Q)the Lord has given them into the hands of Israel.” 13 Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, with his armor bearer behind him; and they fell before Jonathan, and his armor bearer put some to death after him. 14 That first slaughter which Jonathan and his armor bearer made was about twenty men within about half a furrow in an acre of land. 15 And there was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. Even the garrison and (R)the raiders trembled, and (S)the earth quaked so (T)that it became a [f]great trembling.

16 Now Saul’s watchmen in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and behold, the multitude melted away; and they went here and there. 17 Saul said to the people who were with him, “[g]Number now and see who has gone from us.” And when they had [h]numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armor bearer were not there. 18 Then Saul said to Ahijah, “(U)Bring the ark of God here.” For the ark of God was at that time with the sons of Israel. 19 (V)While Saul talked to the priest, the commotion in the camp of the Philistines continued and increased; so Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.” 20 Then Saul and all the people who were with him rallied and came to the battle; and behold, (W)every man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was very great confusion. 21 Now the Hebrews who were with the Philistines previously, who went up with them all around in the camp, even (X)they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. 22 When all the (Y)men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines had fled, even they also pursued them closely in the battle. 23 So (Z)the Lord delivered Israel that day, and the battle [i]spread beyond (AA)Beth-aven.

Galatians 6:11-18

11 See with what large letters I [a]am writing to you (A)with my own hand. 12 Those who desire (B)to make a good showing in the flesh try to (C)compel you to be circumcised, simply so that they (D)will not be persecuted [b]for the cross of Christ. 13 For those who [c]are circumcised do not even (E)keep [d]the Law themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised so that they may (F)boast in your flesh. 14 But (G)may it never be that I would boast, (H)except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, (I)through [e]which the world has been crucified to me, and (J)I to the world. 15 For (K)neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a (L)new [f]creation. 16 And those who will [g]walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the (M)Israel of God.

17 From now on let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the (N)brand-marks of Jesus.

18 (O)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be (P)with your spirit, (Q)brethren. Amen.
