Psalm 99

Psalm 99

The King Is Holy

The Lord reigns! Let the peoples tremble.
He is enthroned above the cherubim.(A)
Let the earth quake.(B)
Yahweh is great in Zion;
He is exalted above all the peoples.(C)
Let them praise Your great
and awe-inspiring name.(D)
He is holy.(E)

The mighty King loves justice.
You have established fairness;
You have administered justice
and righteousness in Jacob.(F)
Exalt the Lord our God;
bow in worship at His footstool.(G)
He is holy.(H)

Moses and Aaron were among His priests;(I)
Samuel also was among those calling on His name.
They called to Yahweh and He answered them.(J)
He spoke to them in a pillar of cloud;(K)
they kept His decrees and the statutes He gave them.
Lord our God, You answered them.
You were a forgiving God to them,(L)
an avenger of their sinful actions.(M)

Exalt the Lord our God;
bow in worship at His holy mountain,
for the Lord our God is holy.(N)

1 Samuel 2:11-17

11 Elkanah went home to Ramah,(A) but the boy served the Lord in the presence of Eli the priest.(B)

Eli’s Family Judged

12 Eli’s sons were wicked men;(C) they had no regard for the Lord(D) 13 or for the priests’ share of the sacrifices from the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged meat fork while the meat was boiling 14 and plunge it into the container or kettle or cauldron or cooking pot.(E) The priest would claim for himself whatever the meat fork brought up. This is the way they treated all the Israelites who came there to Shiloh. 15 Even before the fat was burned,(F) the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast, because he won’t accept boiled meat from you—only raw.” 16 If that man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you can take whatever you want for yourself,”(G) the servant would reply, “No, I insist that you hand it over right now. If you don’t, I’ll take it by force!” 17 So the servants’ sin was very severe in the presence of the Lord, because they treated the Lord’s offering with contempt.(H)

Romans 9:19-29

19 You will say to me,(A) therefore, “Why then does He still find fault?(B) For who can resist His will?”(C) 20 But who are you, a mere man, to talk back to God?(D) Will what is formed say to the one who formed it, “Why did you make me like this?”(E) 21 Or has the potter no right over the clay,(F) to make from the same lump one piece of pottery for honor and another for dishonor? 22 And what if God, desiring to display His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience(G) objects of wrath ready for destruction?(H) 23 And what if He did this to make known the riches of His glory(I) on objects of mercy(J) that He prepared beforehand for glory(K) 24 on us, the ones He also called,(L) not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?(M) 25 As He also says in Hosea:

I will call Not My People, My People,
and she who is Unloved, Beloved.(N)[a]
26 And it will be in the place where they were told,
you are not My people,
there they will be called sons of the living God.(O)[b]

27 But Isaiah cries out concerning Israel:

Though the number of Israel’s sons
is like the sand of the sea,(P)
only the remnant will be saved;(Q)
28 for the Lord will execute His sentence
completely and decisively on the earth.[c](R)[d]

29 And just as Isaiah predicted:

If the Lord of Hosts[e] had not left us offspring,(S)
we would have become like Sodom,
and we would have been made like Gomorrah.(T)[f]
