Comfort in Times of Trouble

77 My voice goes up to God, and I will cry out. My voice goes up to God and He will hear me. ² I looked to the Lord when I was in trouble. I put out my hand at night, and it did not get tired. My soul would not be comforted. ³ When I remember God, then I am troubled. When I am in deep thought, then my spirit becomes weak. ⁴ You keep my eyes from closing. I am so troubled that I cannot speak. ⁵ I have thought about the days of old, the years of long ago. ⁶ I remember my song in the night. I think with my heart. And my spirit asks questions.

⁷ Will the Lord turn away forever? Will He never show favor again? ⁸ Has His loving-kindness stopped forever? Has His promise come to an end for all time? ⁹ Has God forgotten to be loving and kind? Has He in anger taken away His loving-pity? ¹⁰ Then I said, “It is my sorrow that the right hand of the Most High has changed.”

¹¹ I will remember the things the Lord has done. Yes, I will remember the powerful works of long ago. ¹² I will think of all Your work, and keep in mind all the great things You have done. ¹³ O God, Your way is holy. What god is great like our God? ¹⁴ You are the God Who does great works. You have shown Your power among the people. ¹⁵ You have set free Your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph, with Your strong arm.

¹⁶ The waters saw You, O God. The waters saw You and shook. The sea shook also. ¹⁷ The clouds poured down water. The sky sounded with thunder. Your arrows of lightning went this way and that. ¹⁸ The sound of Your thunder was in the turning wind. The lightning lit up the world. The earth shook. ¹⁹ Your way was through the sea. Your paths went through the powerful waters. And it cannot be known where You stepped. ²⁰ You led Your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

⁸ “But as for me, I would look to God. I would put my troubles before God. ⁹ He does great things, too great for us to understand. He does too many wonderful things for us to number. ¹⁰ He gives rain on the earth and sends water on the fields. ¹¹ He puts those who are in low places up to high places. Those who are filled with sorrow are lifted to where they are safe. ¹² He troubles the plans of those who try to fool people, so that their hands cannot do what they plan. ¹³ God gets them into a trap when they use their own wisdom. And the plans of the wise are brought to a quick end. ¹⁴ They meet with darkness during the day, and feel their way at noon as in the night. ¹⁵ But He saves from the sword those in need. He saves the poor from the power of the strong. ¹⁶ So those who have no hope, have hope, and what is not right and good must shut its mouth.

¹⁷ “See, happy is the man to whom God speaks strong words. So do not hate the strong teaching of the All-powerful. ¹⁸ He punishes, but He gives comfort. He hurts, but His hands heal. ¹⁹ He will take you out of six troubles. Yes, in seven, nothing will hurt you. ²⁰ He will keep you from death in times of no food, and from the power of the sword in war. ²¹ You will be hidden from the punishment of the tongue. You will not be afraid of being destroyed when danger comes. ²² You will laugh at danger and times of no food. And you will not be afraid of wild animals. ²³ For you will be in agreement with the stones of the field. And the animals of the field will be at peace with you. ²⁴ You will know that your tent is safe. You will look over what you have and see that nothing is gone. ²⁵ You will know also that your children and children’s children will be many. They will be as the grass of the earth. ²⁶ You will come to the grave in full strength, like the grain gathered in when it is time. ²⁷ See, this is what we have found, and it is true. Hear it, and know for yourself.”

Teaching for All Christians

⁸ Last of all, you must share the same thoughts and the same feelings. Love each other with a kind heart and with a mind that has no pride. ⁹ When someone does something bad to you, do not do the same thing to him. When someone talks about you, do not talk about him. Instead, pray that good will come to him. You were called to do this so you might receive good things from God. ¹⁰ For “If you want joy in your life and have happy days, keep your tongue from saying bad things and your lips from talking bad about others. ¹¹ Turn away from what is sinful. Do what is good. Look for peace and go after it. ¹² The Lord watches over those who are right with Him. He hears their prayers. But the Lord is against those who sin.” ^{(A) 13} Who will hurt you if you do what is right? ¹⁴ But even if you suffer for doing what is right, you will be happy. Do not be afraid or troubled by what they may do to make it hard for you. ¹⁵ Your heart should be holy and set apart for the Lord God. Always be ready to tell everyone who asks you why you believe as you do. Be gentle as you speak and show respect. ¹⁶ Keep your heart telling you that you have done what is right. If men speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see the good way you have lived as a Christian. ¹⁷ If God wants you to suffer, it is better to suffer for doing what is right than for doing what is wrong.

Christ Suffered for Us

¹⁸ Christ suffered and died for sins once for all. He never sinned and yet He died for us who have sinned. He died so He might bring us to God. His body died but His spirit was made alive.
