Psalm 148

Psalm 148

Praise the Eternal!
All you in the heavens, praise the Eternal;
    praise Him from the highest places!
All you, His messengers and His armies in heaven:
    praise Him!
Sun, moon, and all you brilliant stars above:
    praise Him!
Highest heavens and all you waters above the heavens:
    praise Him!

Let all things join together in a concert of praise to the name of the Eternal,
    for He gave the command and they were created.
He put them in their places to stay forever—
    He declared it so, and it is final.

Everything on earth, join in and praise the Eternal;
    sea monsters and creatures of the deep,
Lightning and hail, snow and foggy mists,
    violent winds all respond to His command.

Mountains and hills,
    fruit trees and cedar forests,
10 All you animals both wild and tame,
    reptiles and birds who take flight:
    praise the Lord.

11 All kings and all nations,
    princes and all judges of the earth,
12 All people, young men and women,
    old men and children alike,
    praise the Lord.

13 Let them all praise the name of the Eternal!
    For His name stands alone above all others.
    His glory shines greater than anything above or below.
14 He has made His people strong;
    He is the praise of all who are godly,
    the praise of the children of Israel, those whom He holds close.
Praise the Eternal!

Proverbs 1:1-7

I, Solomon, David’s son and Israel’s king, pass on to you these proverbs—a treasury of wisdom

So that you would recognize wisdom and value discipline;
    that you would understand insightful teaching
And receive wise guidance to live a disciplined life;
    that you would seek justice and have the ability to choose what is right and fair.
These proverbs teach the naive how to become clever;
    they instruct the young in how to grow in knowledge and live with discretion.
The wise will pay attention to these words and will grow in learning,
    and the discerning will receive divine guidance,
And they will be able to interpret the meaning of a proverb and a puzzle,
    the twists and turns in the words of the wise and their riddles.

A strategic translation decision has been made to respect the historical situation of this book. In its original context, Proverbs is practical wisdom passed down from parents (especially fathers, see chapters 1–9) to young men who are preparing to enter a life of adult responsibilities: family, business, community leadership, and so on. Because of this relational aspect, we have retained masculine references when appropriate and have used more inclusive language when that was the intention of the original author. It is our greatest hope that God will use this work to remind fathers of the profound place they have in nurturing, instructing, and guiding the next generation.

Let us begin. The worship of the Eternal One, the one True God, is the first step toward knowledge.
    Fools, however, do not fear God and cannot stand wisdom or guidance.

James 3:13-18

13 Who in your community is understanding and wise? Let his example, which is marked by wisdom and gentleness, blaze a trail for others. 14 If your heart is one that bleeds dark streams of jealousy and selfishness, do not be so proud that you ignore your depraved state. 15 The wisdom of this world should never be mistaken for heavenly wisdom; it originates below in the earthly realms, with the demons. 16 Any place where you find jealousy and selfish ambition, you will discover chaos and evil thriving under its rule. 17 Heavenly wisdom centers on purity, peace, gentleness, deference, mercy, and other good fruits untainted by hypocrisy. 18 The seed that flowers into righteousness will always be planted in peace by those who embrace peace.
