Psalm 148

Come Praise the Lord

Shout praises to the Lord!
Shout the Lord's praises
    in the highest heavens.
All of you angels,
and all who serve him above,
    come and offer praise.

Sun and moon,
and all of you bright stars,
    come and offer praise.
Highest heavens, and the water
above the highest heavens,[a]
    come and offer praise.

Let all things praise
    the name of the Lord,
because they were created
    at his command.
He made them to last forever,
and nothing can change
    what he has done.[b]

All creatures on earth,
you obey his commands,
    so come praise the Lord!

Sea monsters and the deep sea,
fire and hail, snow and frost,
    and every stormy wind,
    come praise the Lord!

All mountains and hills,
    fruit trees and cedars,
10 every wild and tame animal,
all reptiles and birds,
    come praise the Lord!

11 Every king and every ruler,
    all nations on earth,
12 every man and every woman,
young people and old,
    come praise the Lord!

13 All creation, come praise
the name of the Lord.
    Praise his name alone.
The glory of God is greater
    than heaven and earth.

14 Like a bull with mighty horns,
the Lord protects
    his faithful nation Israel,
because they belong to him.
    Shout praises to the Lord!

Proverbs 9:1-12

Wisdom Gives a Feast

Wisdom has built her house
    with its seven columns.
She has prepared the meat
and set out the wine.
    Her feast is ready.

She has sent her servant women
to announce her invitation
    from the highest hills:
“Everyone who is ignorant
    or foolish is invited!
All of you are welcome
    to my meat and wine.
If you want to live,
    give up your foolishness
and let understanding
    guide your steps.”

True Wisdom

Correct a worthless bragger,
and all you will get
    are insults and injuries.
Any bragger you correct
    will only hate you.
But if you correct someone
who has common sense,
    you will be loved.
If you have good sense,
instruction will help you
    to have even better sense.
And if you live right,
education will help you
    to know even more.

10 (A) Respect and obey the Lord!
This is the beginning
    of wisdom.[a]
To have understanding,
you must know the Holy God.
11 I am Wisdom. If you follow me,
you will live a long time.
12 Good sense is good for you,
but if you brag,
    you hurt yourself.

2 Peter 3:8-13

(A) Dear friends, don't forget that for the Lord one day is the same as 1,000 years, and 1,000 years is the same as one day. The Lord isn't slow about keeping his promises, as some people think he is. In fact, God is patient, because he wants everyone to turn from sin and no one to be lost.

10 (B) The day of the Lord's return will surprise us like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a loud noise, and the heat will melt the whole universe.[a] Then the earth and everything on it will be seen for what they are.[b]

11 Everything will be destroyed. So you should serve and honor God by the way you live. 12 You should look forward to the day when God judges everyone, and you should try to make it come soon.[c] On that day the heavens will be destroyed by fire, and everything else will melt in the heat. 13 (C) But God has promised us a new heaven and a new earth, where justice will rule. We are really looking forward to this!
