Psalm 107:1-7

BOOK V

(Psalms 107–150)

The Lord Is Good to His People

(A) Shout praises to the Lord!
He is good to us,
    and his love never fails.
Everyone the Lord has rescued
from trouble
    should praise him,
everyone he has brought
from the east and the west,
    the north and the south.[a]

Some of you were lost
in the scorching desert,
    far from a town.
You were hungry and thirsty
    and about to give up.
You were in serious trouble,
but you prayed to the Lord,
    and he rescued you.
At once he brought you
    to a town.

Psalm 107:33-37

33 If you start doing wrong,
the Lord will turn rivers
    into deserts,
34 (A) flowing streams
    into scorched land,
and fruitful fields
    into beds of salt.

35 But the Lord can also turn
    deserts into lakes
and scorched land
    into flowing streams.
36 If you are hungry,
you can settle there
    and build a town.
37 You can plant fields
and vineyards that produce
    a good harvest.

Joshua 1:1-11

Joshua Becomes the Leader of Israel

Moses, the Lord's servant, was dead. So the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun, who had been the assistant of Moses. The Lord said:

My servant Moses is dead. Now you must lead Israel across the Jordan River into the land I'm giving to all of you. (A) Wherever you go, I'll give you that land, as I promised Moses. It will reach from the Southern Desert to the Lebanon Mountains in the north, and to the northeast as far as the great Euphrates River. It will include the land of the Hittites,[a] and the land from here at the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea on the west. (B) Joshua, I will always be with you and help you as I helped Moses, and no one will ever be able to defeat you.

6-8 (C) Long ago I promised the ancestors of Israel that I would give this land to their descendants. So be strong and brave! Be careful to do everything my servant Moses taught you. Never stop reading The Book of the Law[b] he gave you. Day and night you must think about what it says. If you obey it completely, you and Israel will be able to take this land.

I've commanded you to be strong and brave. Don't ever be afraid or discouraged! I am the Lord your God, and I will be there to help you wherever you go.

The Eastern Tribes Promise To Help

10 Joshua ordered the tribal leaders 11 to go through the camp and tell everyone:

In a few days we will cross the Jordan River to take the land that the Lord our God is giving us. So prepare as much food as you'll need for the march into the land.

Romans 2:17-29

The Jews and the Law

17 Some of you call yourselves Jews. You trust in the Law and take pride in God. 18 By reading the Scriptures you learn how God wants you to behave, and you discover what is right. 19 You are sure that you are a guide for the blind and a light for all who are in the dark. 20 And since there is knowledge and truth in God's Law, you think you can instruct fools and teach young people.

21 But how can you teach others when you refuse to learn? You preach it is wrong to steal. But do you steal? 22 You say people should be faithful in marriage. But are you faithful? You hate idols, yet you rob their temples. 23 You take pride in the Law, but you disobey the Law and bring shame to God. 24 (A) It is just as the Scriptures tell us, “You have made foreigners say insulting things about God.”

25 Being circumcised is worthwhile, if you obey the Law. But if you don't obey the Law, you are no better off than people who are not circumcised. 26 In fact, if they obey the Law, they are as good as anyone who is circumcised. 27 So everyone who obeys the Law, but has never been circumcised, will condemn you. Even though you are circumcised and have the Law, you still don't obey its teachings.

28 Just because you live like a Jew and are circumcised doesn't make you a real Jew. 29 (B) To be a real Jew you must obey the Law. True circumcision is something that happens deep in your heart, not something done to your body. And besides, you should want praise from God and not from humans.
