Psalm 114

God Takes Israel from Egypt

114 Israel came out of Egypt. The house of Jacob came from a people who spoke a strange language. Then Judah became His holy place, and Israel became the place of His rule.

The sea looked and ran away. The Jordan turned back. The mountains jumped like sheep, the hills like lambs. Why did you try to get away, O sea? Why did you turn back, O Jordan? O mountains, why did you jump like sheep? O hills, why did you jump like lambs?

Shake in fear before the Lord, O earth, before the God of Jacob. He changed the rock into a pool of water. He made water flow out of hard rock.

Exodus 13:17-22

Cloud by Day and Fire by Night

17 When Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even when that was nearer. For God said, “The people may change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people through the desert to get to the Red Sea. The people of Israel went out of the land of Egypt ready for war. 19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the people of Israel promise. He had said, “For sure God will keep you and you will carry my bones with you from here.” 20 Then they left Succoth and set up their tents at Etham, beside the desert. 21 The Lord went before them, in a pillar of cloud during the day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire during the night to give them light. So they could travel day and night. 22 The pillar of cloud during the day and the pillar of fire during the night did not leave the people.

1 John 3:11-16

11 This is what you have heard from the beginning, that we should love each other. 12 Do not be like Cain. He was a child of the devil and killed his brother. Why did he kill him? It was because he did what was sinful and his brother did what was right.

13 Do not be surprised if the world hates you, Christian brothers. 14 We know we have passed from death into life. We know this because we love the Christians. The person who does not love has not passed from death into life. 15 A man who hates his brother is a killer in his heart. You know that life which lasts forever is not in one who kills.

16 We know what love is because Christ gave His life for us. We should give our lives for our brothers.
