Psalm 23

A Davidic Psalm.

The Lord Shepherds His People

23 The Lord is the one who is shepherding me;
    I lack nothing.
He causes me to lie down in pastures of green grass;
    he guides me beside quiet waters.
He revives my life;
    he leads me in pathways that are righteous
        for the sake of his name.[a]

Even when I walk through a valley of deep darkness,[b]
    I will not be afraid
        because you are with me.
Your rod and your staff—they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me,
    even in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
Truly, goodness and gracious love will pursue me
    all the days of my life,
        and I will remain in[c] the Lord’s Temple forever.[d]

1 Samuel 15:32-34

Samuel Executes King Agag

32 Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag king of Amalek to me.”

Agag came to him in fetters, saying to himself,[a] “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”

33 Samuel said, “Just as your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women.” Then Samuel cut Agag into pieces in the Lord’s presence in Gilgal.

34 Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went to his house in Gibeah of Saul.

John 1:1-9

The Word and Creation

In the beginning, the Word existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. Through him all things were made, and apart from him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life brought light to humanity.[a] And the light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.[b]

John’s Witness to the Word

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe because of him. John[c] was not the light, but he came[d] to testify about the light. This[e] was the true light that enlightens every person by his coming into the world.[f]
