Psalm 2

The Nations Conspire, But God’s King Rules Securely

The Futile Rebellion of the Nations

Why do the nations rage?
Why do the peoples grumble in vain?
The kings of the earth take a stand,
and the rulers join together
    against the Lord
    and against his Anointed One.[a]
“Let us tear off their chains
and throw off their ropes from us.”

The Reaction of the Lord

The one who is seated in heaven laughs.
The Lord scoffs at them.
Then he speaks to them in his anger,
and in his wrath he terrifies them.
“I have installed my King on Zion, my holy mountain.”

The Powerful Rule of God’s King

I will proclaim the decree of the Lord.
He said to me:
“You are my Son.
Today I have begotten you.[b]
Ask me,
and I will give you the nations as your inheritance
and the ends of the earth as your possession.
You will smash them with an iron rod.
You will break them to pieces like pottery.”

The Lesson to Be Learned

10 So now, you kings, do what is wise.
Accept discipline,[c] you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son,
or he will be angry,
and you will be destroyed in your way,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
How blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Jeremiah 18:12-23

12 But they will say, “It is hopeless! Each of us will always walk in the stubbornness of his own evil heart.”

13 Therefore this is what the Lord says.

Ask among the nations,
“Who has ever heard anything like this?”
Virgin Israel has done a most terrible thing.
14 Does the snow of Lebanon ever disappear from its rocky slopes?
Does cold water flowing from a long distance ever run dry?
15 Yet my people have forgotten me.
They burn incense to false gods,
that make them stumble in their ways,
    in the ancient paths.
They walk on side roads,
on roads not built up.
16 They make their land something horrible,
a target of lasting contempt.[a]
Everyone who passes by will be horrified and shake his head.
17 Like the east wind I will scatter them in front of their enemies.
I will show them my back and not my face on the day of their calamity.

A Plot Against Jeremiah

18 Some people said, “Come on! Let’s make plans against Jeremiah, because the law will not vanish from the priest, nor guidance from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come on, let’s attack him with words and pay no attention to anything he says.”

19 Listen to me, Lord.
Listen to what my opponents are saying.
20 Should good be repaid with evil?
Yet they have dug a pit for me.
Remember how I stood before you to speak on their behalf,
to turn your anger from them.
21 Therefore, hand their children over to famine,
and hand them over to the power of the sword.
Let their wives become childless widows.
Let their men be put to death,
and their young men be struck in battle by the sword.
22 Let a cry be heard from their houses
when you suddenly bring marauders against them,
because they have dug a pit to capture me
and have hidden snares for my feet.
23 But you, Lord, are aware of all their plots to kill me.
Do not forgive their guilt.
Do not blot out their sin from your sight.
Let them be overthrown in your presence.
Deal with them in the time of your anger.

1 Timothy 3:14-4:5

Summary and Doxology

14 I am writing these things to you even though I hope to come to you shortly. 15 But if I am delayed, I wanted you to know how it is necessary to behave in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. 16 Undeniably, great is the mystery of godliness:

He[a] was revealed in flesh,
was justified in spirit,[b]
was seen by messengers,[c]
was preached among the nations,
was believed on in the world,
was taken up in glory.

Some Will Fall Away

The Spirit clearly says that, in later times, some will fall away from the faith, because they devote themselves to deceitful spirits and the doctrines of demons, in connection with the hypocrisy of liars, whose own consciences have been seared. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. In fact, everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
