Version
1 Kings 18:20-21

20 Elijah Destroys the Evil Prophets. So Ahab sent word to all of the Israelites, and he gathered together the prophets on Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah approached all of the people and said, “How long will you be stuck between two points of view? If the Lord is God, then follow him, but if it is Baal, then follow him.” But the people did not say a single thing to him.[a]

1 Kings 18:22-29

22 Elijah then said to the people, “I am the only prophet of the Lord left, but there are four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal. 23 Now give us two oxen. They can choose which ox is theirs. Let them cut it up and lay it on the wood, but do not set it on fire. I will prepare the other ox and lay it on the wood, but I will not set it on fire. 24 Call on the name of your God, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The God who answers with fire, that is God.” All of the people answered, “You have spoken well.”

25 So Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “You can be the first to choose one of the oxen for yourselves and prepare it because you are more numerous. Call upon the name of your gods, but do not set it on fire.”

26 They took the ox that had been given them, and they prepared it. They called upon the name of Baal from the morning until noontime. They said, “Hear us, O Baal.” But there was no voice, and no one answered. They then leapt around on the altar they had built. 27 At noon, Elijah mocked them and said, “Cry out loud, for he is a god. He might be meditating, or maybe he has gone aside. Perhaps he is on a journey, or maybe he is asleep and needs to be woken up.”

28 So they cried out loud, and they slashed themselves with knives and swords as was their custom until blood gushed out from their bodies. 29 In the afternoon they prophesied until the time of the evening sacrifice, but there was no voice, no answer, no one listened.

1 Kings 18:30-39

30 Elijah said to all the people, “Come over here to me.” So all the people went over to him. He repaired the altar of God that had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob to whom the word of the Lord came saying, “Your name will be Israel.” 32 With the stones he built an altar to the name of the Lord. He dug a trench around the altar deep enough to hold two measures of seed. 33 He piled up the wood, and cut up the ox into pieces. He laid them on the wood and said, “Fill four barrels with water and pour them on the burnt sacrifice and the wood.” 34 Then he said, “Do it a second time,” and they did it a second time. Then he said, “Do it a third time,” and they did it a third time. 35 The water flowed around the altar, and the water filled the trench.

36 [a]At the hour for the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet drew near and said, “O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known today that you are the God of Israel, and that I am your servant, and I have done all of these things by your command. 37 Answer me, O Lord, answer me so that this people might know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”

38 The fire of the Lord fell down and consumed the burnt offering as well as the wood, the stones, the soil, and even the water that it licked up from the trench. 39 When all of the people saw this, they fell down upon their faces and said, “The Lord is God; the Lord is God!”

Psalm 96

Psalm 96[a]

God, Sovereign and Judge of the Universe

Sing to the Lord a new song;[b]
    sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord and bless his name;
    proclaim his salvation[c] day after day.
Declare his glory[d] among the nations,
    his wondrous deeds to every people.
For great is the Lord and worthy of all praise;
    he is more to be feared[e] than all other gods.
The gods of the nations are merely idols,
    but it was the Lord who made the heavens.[f]
Majesty and splendor surround him;
    power and beauty[g] are in his sanctuary.
Render to the Lord, you families of nations,
    render to the Lord glory and power.[h]
Render to the Lord the glory due to his name;
    bring an offering and enter his courts.[i]
Worship[j] the Lord in the splendor of his holiness;
    tremble before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord is King.[k]
    The world is firmly established, never to be moved.
    He will judge the peoples fairly.”
11 Let the heavens exult and the earth be glad;
    let the sea resound and all that fills it.
12 Let the fields rejoice and all that is in them;
    let all the trees[l] of the forest shout for joy
13 before the Lord, for he is coming,
    coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with justice
    and the nations with equity.[m]

Galatians 1:1-12

Paul Defends His Apostolate[a]

Chapter 1

Address

Paul Commissioned by Christ Himself.[b] Paul, an apostle[c]—commissioned not by human authority or by any human being, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised him from the dead— and all the brethren[d] who are with me, to the Churches of Galatia. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age[e] in accordance with the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.[f]

One Gospel, One Revelation, One Apostolate[g]

Loyalty to the Gospel. I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel. In reality, there is not another one, but there are some who are troubling you by perverting the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel to you other than the one we proclaimed to you, let him be accursed! We have said this before, and now I repeat it: if anyone preaches to you a gospel other than the one you received, let him be accursed![h]

10 Does it now appear to you that I am trying to gain the approval of human beings rather than the approval of God? Am I seeking to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

11 Paul’s Gospel Revealed to Him by Christ.[i]Brethren, I want you to be assured that the gospel I preached to you is not human in its origin. 12 I did not receive it from a human being, nor was I taught it. Rather, I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

Luke 7:1-10

From the Beatitudes to the Parables[a]

Chapter 7

Jesus Heals the Centurion’s Servant.[b] After Jesus had finished speaking to the people, he entered Capernaum. A centurion who dwelt there had a servant whom he regarded highly and who was ill and near death. When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to ask him if he would come and heal his servant.

When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, saying, “He deserves this favor from you, for he loves our people, and he was the one who built our synagogue for us.”

Jesus went with them. When he drew near the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. That is the reason why I did not presume to approach you personally. But say the word and let my servant be healed. For I also am a man subject to authority, with soldiers who are subject to me. I say to one: ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another: ‘Come here,’ and he comes, and to my servant: ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

When Jesus heard these words, he was amazed, and, turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, in no one throughout Israel have I found faith as great as this.” 10 When the messengers returned to the house, they found the servant completely healthy.
