Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 69
Prayer for Deliverance from Persecution
To the leader: according to Lilies. Of David.
13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
At an acceptable time, O God,
in the abundance of your steadfast love, answer me.
With your faithful help(A) 14 rescue me
from sinking in the mire;
let me be delivered from my enemies
and from the deep waters.(B)
15 Do not let the flood sweep over me
or the deep swallow me up
or the Pit close its mouth over me.(C)
16 Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good;
according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.(D)
30 I will praise the name of God with a song;
I will magnify him with thanksgiving.(A)
31 This will please the Lord more than an ox
or a bull with horns and hoofs.(B)
32 Let the oppressed see it and be glad;
you who seek God, let your hearts revive.(C)
33 For the Lord hears the needy
and does not despise his own who are in bonds.(D)
Beginnings of Civilization
17 Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch, and he built a city and named it Enoch after his son Enoch.(A) 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael the father of Methushael, and Methushael the father of Lamech.(B) 19 Lamech took two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 20 Adah bore Jabal; he was the ancestor of those who live in tents and have livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the ancestor of all those who play the lyre and pipe. 22 Zillah bore Tubal-cain, who made all kinds of bronze and iron tools. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
23 Lamech said to his wives:
“Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;
you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say:
I have killed a man for wounding me,
a young man for striking me.(C)
24 If Cain is avenged sevenfold,
truly Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”(D)
25 Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth,[a] for she said, “God has appointed for me another child instead of Abel, because Cain killed him.”(E) 26 To Seth also a son was born, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to invoke the name of the Lord.(F)
Adam’s Descendants to Noah and His Sons
5 This is the list of the descendants of Adam. When God created humans,[b] he made them[c] in the likeness of God.(G) 2 Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and called them humans[d] when they were created.(H)
3 When Adam had lived one hundred thirty years, he became the father of a son in his likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth.(I) 4 The days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years, and he had other sons and daughters. 5 Thus all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred thirty years, and he died.(J)
None Is Righteous
9 What then? Are we any better off?[a] No, not at all, for we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under the power of sin,(A) 10 as it is written:
“There is no one who is righteous, not even one;(B)
11 there is no one who has understanding;
there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
there is no one who shows kindness;
there is not even one.”
13 “Their throats are opened graves;
they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of vipers is under their lips.”(C)
14 “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;(D)
16 ruin and misery are in their paths,
17 and the way of peace they have not known.”
18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
19 Now we know that, whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God.(E) 20 For no human will be justified before him by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.(F)
Righteousness through Faith
21 But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed and is attested by the Law and the Prophets,(G) 22 the righteousness of God through the faith of Jesus Christ[b] for all who believe.[c] For there is no distinction,(H)
