Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 69[a]
For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David.
13 But I pray to you, Lord,
in the time of your favor;(A)
in your great love,(B) O God,
answer me with your sure salvation.
14 Rescue me from the mire,
do not let me sink;
deliver me from those who hate me,
from the deep waters.(C)
15 Do not let the floodwaters(D) engulf me
or the depths swallow me up(E)
or the pit close its mouth over me.(F)
16 Answer me, Lord, out of the goodness of your love;(G)
in your great mercy turn to me.
30 I will praise God’s name in song(A)
and glorify him(B) with thanksgiving.
31 This will please the Lord more than an ox,
more than a bull with its horns and hooves.(C)
32 The poor will see and be glad(D)—
you who seek God, may your hearts live!(E)
33 The Lord hears the needy(F)
and does not despise his captive people.
17 Cain made love to his wife,(A) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city,(B) and he named it after his son(C) Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
19 Lamech married(D) two women,(E) one named Adah and the other Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments(F) and pipes.(G) 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged(H) all kinds of tools out of[a] bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.
23 Lamech said to his wives,
“Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed(I) a man for wounding me,
a young man for injuring me.
24 If Cain is avenged(J) seven times,(K)
then Lamech seventy-seven times.(L)”
25 Adam made love to his wife(M) again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,[b](N) saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”(O) 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.(P)
At that time people began to call on[c] the name of the Lord.(Q)
From Adam to Noah
5 This is the written account(R) of Adam’s family line.(S)
When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God.(T) 2 He created them(U) male and female(V) and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind”[d] when they were created.
3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image;(W) and he named him Seth.(X) 4 After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5 Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.(Y)
No One Is Righteous
9 What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage?(A) Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.(B) 10 As it is written:
“There is no one righteous, not even one;
11 there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away,
they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.”[a](C)
13 “Their throats are open graves;
their tongues practice deceit.”[b](D)
“The poison of vipers is on their lips.”[c](E)
14 “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”[d](F)
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 ruin and misery mark their ways,
17 and the way of peace they do not know.”[e](G)
18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”[f](H)
19 Now we know that whatever the law says,(I) it says to those who are under the law,(J) so that every mouth may be silenced(K) and the whole world held accountable to God.(L) 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law;(M) rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.(N)
Righteousness Through Faith
21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God(O) has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.(P) 22 This righteousness(Q) is given through faith(R) in[g] Jesus Christ(S) to all who believe.(T) There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,(U)
