Psalm 69^[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David.

¹⁷ Cain made love to his wife,^(A) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city,^(B) and he named it after his son^(C) Enoch. ¹⁸ To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.

¹⁹ Lamech married^(D) two women,^(E) one named Adah and the other Zillah. ²⁰ Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. ²¹ His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments^(F) and pipes.^{(G) 22} Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged^(H) all kinds of tools out of^[a] bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.

²³ Lamech said to his wives,

²⁵ Adam made love to his wife^(M) again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,^[b](N) saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”^{(O) 26} Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.^(P)

At that time people began to call on^[c] the name of the Lord.^(Q)

From Adam to Noah

5 This is the written account^(R) of Adam’s family line.^(S)

When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God.^{(T) 2} He created them^(U) male and female^(V) and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind”^[d] when they were created.

³ When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image;^(W) and he named him Seth.^{(X) 4} After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. ⁵ Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.^(Y)

No One Is Righteous

⁹ What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage?^(A) Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.^{(B) 10} As it is written:

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says,^(I) it says to those who are under the law,^(J) so that every mouth may be silenced^(K) and the whole world held accountable to God.^{(L) 20} Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law;^(M) rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.^(N)

Righteousness Through Faith

²¹ But now apart from the law the righteousness of God^(O) has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.^{(P) 22} This righteousness^(Q) is given through faith^(R) in^[g] Jesus Christ^(S) to all who believe.^(T) There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,^(U)
