Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
A Cry of Distress and Imprecation on Adversaries.
For the choir director; according to [a]Shoshannim. A Psalm of David.
13 But as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord, (A)at an acceptable time;
O God, in the (B)greatness of Your lovingkindness,
Answer me with [a]Your saving truth.
14 Deliver me from the (C)mire and do not let me sink;
May I be (D)delivered from [b]my foes and from the [c](E)deep waters.
15 May the [d](F)flood of water not overflow me
Nor the deep swallow me up,
Nor the (G)pit shut its mouth on me.
30 I will (A)praise the name of God with song
And (B)magnify Him with (C)thanksgiving.
31 And it will (D)please the Lord better than an ox
Or a young bull with horns and hoofs.
32 The (E)humble [a]have seen it and are glad;
You who seek God, (F)let your heart [b]revive.
33 For (G)the Lord hears the needy
And (H)does not despise His who are prisoners.
17 Cain [a]had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son. 18 Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad [b]became the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael [c]became the father of Methushael, and Methushael [d]became the father of Lamech. 19 Lamech took to himself (A)two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. 22 As for Zillah, she also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
23 Lamech said to his wives,
“Adah and Zillah,
Listen to my voice,
You wives of Lamech,
Give heed to my speech,
(B)For I [e]have killed a man for wounding me;
And a boy for striking me;
24 If Cain is avenged (C)sevenfold,
Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
25 (D)Adam [f]had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him [g]Seth, for, she said, “God [h]has appointed me another [i]offspring in place of Abel, (E)for Cain killed him.” 26 To Seth, to him also (F)a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began (G)to call [j]upon the name of the Lord.
Descendants of Adam
5 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him (H)in the likeness of God. 2 He created them (I)male and female, and He (J)blessed them and named them [k]Man in the day when they were created.
3 When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he [l]became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth. 4 Then the days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years, and he had other sons and daughters. 5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.
9 What then? [a](A)Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both (B)Jews and (C)Greeks are (D)all under sin; 10 as it is written,
“(E)There is none righteous, not even one;
11 There is none who understands,
There is none who seeks for God;
12 All have turned aside, together they have become useless;
There is none who does good,
There is not even one.”
13 “(F)Their throat is an open grave,
With their tongues they keep deceiving,”
“(G)The poison of asps is under their lips”;
14 “(H)Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness”;
15 “(I)Their feet are swift to shed blood,
16 Destruction and misery are in their paths,
17 And the path of peace they have not known.”
18 “(J)There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
19 Now we know that whatever the (K)Law says, it speaks to (L)those who are [b]under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and (M)all the world may become accountable to God; 20 because (N)by the works [c]of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for [d](O)through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
Justification by Faith
21 But now apart [e]from the Law (P)the righteousness of God has been manifested, being (Q)witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the (R)righteousness of God through (S)faith (T)in Jesus Christ for (U)all those [f]who believe; for (V)there is no distinction;
