Psalm 69:1-3

A Cry for Help[a]

69 Save me, O God!
    The water is up to my neck;
I am sinking in deep mud,
    and there is no solid ground;
I am out in deep water,
    and the waves are about to drown me.
I am worn out from calling for help,
    and my throat is aching.
I have strained my eyes,
    looking for your help.

Psalm 69:13-16

13 But as for me, I will pray to you, Lord;
    answer me, God, at a time you choose.
Answer me because of your great love,
    because you keep your promise to save.
14 Save me from sinking in the mud;
    keep me safe from my enemies,
    safe from the deep water.
15 Don't let the flood come over me;
    don't let me drown in the depths
    or sink into the grave.

16 Answer me, Lord, in the goodness of your constant love;
    in your great compassion turn to me!

Psalm 69:30-36

30 I will praise God with a song;
    I will proclaim his greatness by giving him thanks.
31 This will please the Lord more than offering him cattle,
    more than sacrificing a full-grown bull.
32 When the oppressed see this, they will be glad;
    those who worship God will be encouraged.
33 The Lord listens to those in need
    and does not forget his people in prison.

34 Praise God, O heaven and earth,
    seas and all creatures in them.
35 He will save Jerusalem
    and rebuild the towns of Judah.
His people will live there and possess the land;
36     the descendants of his servants will inherit it,
    and those who love him will live there.

Genesis 4:17-5:5

The Descendants of Cain

17 Cain and his wife had a son and named him Enoch. Then Cain built a city and named it after his son. 18 Enoch had a son named Irad, who was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael had a son named Methushael, who was the father of Lamech. 19 Lamech had two wives, Adah and Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the ancestor of those who raise livestock and live in tents. 21 His brother was Jubal, the ancestor of all musicians who play the harp and the flute. 22 Zillah gave birth to Tubal Cain, who made all kinds of tools[a] out of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal Cain was Naamah.

23 Lamech said to his wives,

“Adah and Zillah, listen to me:
I have killed a young man because he struck me.
24 If seven lives are taken to pay for killing Cain,
Seventy-seven will be taken if anyone kills me.”

Seth and Enosh

25 Adam and his wife had another son. She said, “God has given me a son to replace Abel, whom Cain killed.” So she named him Seth.[b] 26 Seth had a son whom he named Enosh. It was then that people began using the Lord's holy name in worship.

The Descendants of Adam(A)

(B)This is the list of the descendants of Adam. (When God created human beings, he made them like himself. (C)He created them male and female, blessed them, and named them “Human Beings.”) When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son who was like him, and he named him Seth. After that, Adam lived another 800 years. He had other children and died at the age of 930.

Romans 3:9-22

No One Is Righteous

Well then, are we Jews in any better condition than the Gentiles? Not at all![a] I have already shown that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. 10 (A)As the Scriptures say:

“There is no one who is righteous,
11     no one who is wise
    or who worships God.
12 All have turned away from God;
    they have all gone wrong;
    no one does what is right, not even one.
13 (B)Their words are full of deadly deceit;
    wicked lies roll off their tongues,
    and dangerous threats, like snake's poison, from their lips;
14     (C)their speech is filled with bitter curses.
15 (D)They are quick to hurt and kill;
16     they leave ruin and destruction wherever they go.
17 They have not known the path of peace,
18     (E)nor have they learned reverence for God.”

19 Now we know that everything in the Law applies to those who live under the Law, in order to stop all human excuses and bring the whole world under God's judgment. 20 (F)For no one is put right in God's sight by doing what the Law requires; what the Law does is to make us know that we have sinned.

How We Are Put Right with God

21 But now God's way of putting people right with himself has been revealed. It has nothing to do with law, even though the Law of Moses and the prophets gave their witness to it. 22 (G)God puts people right through their faith in Jesus Christ. God does this to all who believe in Christ, because there is no difference at all:
